Maestro Stoia was born in Romania in 1915. At the young age of six, he started his love affair with the violin. At both the Military Academy in Romania and the Conservatory of Music in Innsbruck, Austria, he held the position of the youngest music professor in the history of the school. After World War II, a talent scout lured him to the United States. He was concert master of the St. Louis Philharmonic and had a weekly radio show of his violin expertise. In 1952 he was invited to perform in concert at Carnegie Hall.
For twelve years he directed the San Jose Youth Symphony which was so accomplished that they toured Japan, Mexico, and Taiwan. In Berlin, Germany the Youth Symphony was awarded third place in the world for their performance in a prestigious competition.
When he retired, his wife Joen and he moved to Pine Mountain Lake. He worked to build the Tuolumne County Symphony and the arts in our area. They then spent eight years in Italy where he continued to perform for various audiences.
When he and Joen finally settle back in Pine Mountain Lake, he was soon busy with his School of Violin. When he decided to really retire ( at age 86), he had sixteen students who loved him very much.
Maestro Eugene Stoia performed wonderful music for thousands of people to enjoy, from Romania to Italy, from New York to San Francisco. But most of all, he will be remembered by his students. Thousands of students in his Youth Symphony loved him dearly and learned more from his tutorship than any other music teacher. His students here in Groveland and Greeley Hill will always remember him, too. No one else made you love music more than the Maestro, and no one else could bring out of you your best performance like he could. Thank you, Maestro for all you have given our children and our community. You will be missed.
Maestro Stoia is survived by Joen, his wife and love of 44 years, his six children, 12 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
