     He Brief Bio (pr/findagrave)

The Ogden family was as follows:

Generation #1

Benjamin J Ogden was born October 1823 in Virginia to parents who were German immigrants or both born in Virginia, whichever record is correct. He and Adelia married in 1849. By 1854, the couple was living in California. Benjamin worked as a miner. At the time of the 1900 census, he was living but passed away before the 1910 census. He most likely passed away before 1905.

d Adelia A. Ogden passed away in Sonora in 2008. She was the grand-daughter of Byron A. Ogden and the daughter of Earl Ogden and Elizabeth Mehlhous Ogden. This is her obituary as it appeared in the Union Democrat newspaper:

Ellen (Ogden) Burke
March 1, 1918 — May 29, 2008

Longtime Sonora resident Ellen (Ogden) Burke died May 29 at a Sonora hospital. She was 90.

Mrs. Burke was born in Racine, Wis., one of eight children of Earl and Elizabeth Ogden. She was raised in Oakland, and many of her childhood summers were spent with her family at Parrot's Ferry on the Stanislaus River. She was a member of a Mother Lode pioneer family and lived in Sonora for 68 years.

In 1936, she graduated from Fremont High School in Oakland and attended Merritt Business School, also in Oakland. She then worked for Owens Illinois Glass Company. She married William "Bill" Burke on June 23, 1940, at the Church of the 49ers in Columbia.

Mrs. Burke was active in the community. She was a charter member of the Tuolumne County Historical Society and the Tuolumne County Garden Club. For 50 years, she was active in the Girl Scouts of America. She was a member of the Sonora Beautiful Committee, California Native Plant Society and the First Christian Science Church of Sonora. She arranged flowers and entered her floral art in the county fair for many years.

She loved the outdoors and spent many summers backpacking with her family in the Emigrant Wilderness. She enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member and supporter of the Sierra Club, Audubon Society, Wilderness Society and many other environmental causes.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 4, 2002, and a newborn daughter, Donna Elizabeth Burke, on July 12, 1942.

Mrs. Burke is survived by her children, Patrick Burke of Trinidad, Humboldt County, Margaret "Margo" Thomas and her husband, Dave, of Sonora, and Mary Wetzel and her husband, Bob, of Murphys; grandchildren, Kim Hatchelles of Huntington Beach, Kelly Burke of Santa Rosa, Keely Burke of San Francisco, Brett Thomas of Sonora, Justin Thomas of Oakland, and Gretchen Wetzel of Pahoa, Hawaii; six great-grandchildren; siblings Lincoln Ogden, LaVern Monico and Irene Poletti, all of California; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. June 14 at 20234 Phoenix Lake Road in Sonora. A potluck luncheon will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any favorite charity or Penny Pines. For more information on Penny Pines, contact the U.S. Forest Service at 532-3671.

Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Ellen A. was the only one of the eight children to be born outside of California. Her mother was born in Illinois, but her father was a native of Columbia.

The 1920 Census shows the family living in Turlock, California on High Street in a home the family owned. Earl worked as a machinist in a garage.

The 1930 Census shows Ellen's family living in Oakland on 41st Avenue. Earl owned a garage by that time. In those days, a garage referred to an auto repair business.

The following information from the 1930 Census shows where Ellen fit among the eight children.

Father: Earl A., age 44, born about 1886 in California, & his parents were born in California.
Mother: Elizabeth, age 44, born about 1886 in Illinois
Brother: Gordon E., age 17, born about 1913 in California.
Sister: Evelyn V., age 14, born about 1916 in California.
Herself: Ellen A., age 12, born March 1, 1918 in Racine, Wisconsin
Brother: Arthur S., age 9, born about 1921, in California.
Brother: Lincoln R., age 7, born about 1923, in California.
Brother: Donald P., age 5, born about 1925, in California.
Sister: Laverne M., age 3, born about 1927, in California.
The youngest child was born later that year in California. Her name was Irene P.

Byron Augustus Ogden passed away November 3, 1943 in Alameda County.

SON: Eugene C. Ogden was born in 1863 or 1864 in California. By 1880, he was a sixteen year old farmer but still living at home with his parents and brothers. He passed away before the 1900 census. At age seven, he had not yet attended school.

SON: Elmer never married. He worked as a laborer in general work and also worked in the gold mines. He continuously lived with his mother until her death. He was born in 1875, so there is a large age gap between him and Eugene where other children may have been born. His mother was 45 years old when she gave birth to him.

Elmer's obituary appeared in the Sonora newspaper:
