William Gary Richardson was born on 16 June 1935 at New York.1 He died on 2 February 1998 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California, at age 62; Bill was diagnosed with lung cancer the day after Thanksgiving,1997. He died the following February, about 9 weeks after diagnosis.1 There is no gravesite. Bill's cremains were scattered in the Sierras near one of his favorite fishing holes. Present were his widow Jane, his brother Dean, his son Bill, his daughters Beth and Sara, and Ray and Bonnie Stevens. There are at least two bricks at the Groveland Library placed in his memory.1
He Bill had one brother, Dean, who was in 1998 living in Oregon. Dean's wife was a ballerina. He Bill was the consumate salesman, the man who needed to be the center of attention where ever he went. He was tall, dark haired, usually well-spoken with a voice that carried well. He had a sense of humor and was not above making jokes on himself. Trained in Hospitality Management, he would have been in his element running a small but busy inn or bed-and-breakfast facility. Instead, he sold insurance. Bill was active in the Episcopal Church, in Pine Cone Singers and Performers, and with the Sonora Banjo Band where he played the washtub bass and washboard. William Gary Richardson also went by the name of Bill Richardson He referred to himself as SOB, or Sweet Old Bill.1

     He Brief Bio:

THE MERRELLS OF MERRELL ROAD

Josiah M. Merrell, a son of Charles G. Merrell, was born in 1833 in Syracuse, New York. In 1847 the family immigrated to the Pacific coast, making the journey overland to the Washington Territory. Josiah accompanied his father on a short excursion to California at about the same time as the California Gold Rush and then both returned to Oregon where his father made a permanent settlement in what is now known as Washington County. Subsequent to the gold and silver bonanza in the Idaho Territory (comprised of Idaho, Montana and eventually Wyoming) Josiah made his way to Butte City Montana and worked as a miner. Within a very short time he moved to Philipsburg Montana where he operated a grocery store. Shortly thereafter he partnered with miners James W. Estill and Eli D. Holland to develop the Granite Mine, located three miles from Philipsburg, which by 1894 was one of the bonanza mines [silver] of America.

Josiah was married twice. His first marriage (of short duration) in 1876 was to Sarah A. (Waterbury) Murdock. Sarah was the sister of Edwin B Waterbury, Philipsburg’s Justice of the Peace. Josiah and his second wife Elizabeth Davis were married in Deer Lodge County in 1878. Elizabeth was the daughter of David and Jane (Scott) Davis of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Their son Millard was born in Butte in 1884. A multi-millionaire with considerable mining and mercantile investments Josiah removed his family to California and settled in Oakland in1888. Their home was situated right in the heart of the city on Telegraph Avenue between Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth streets. The grounds occupied one city block and were among the largest of city gardens.

The Merrell’s son Millard received his elementary school education in Europe, attended high school in Oakland and obtained a mining engineering degree from South Dakota School of Mines. While Millard studied Civil and Mining Engineering at the Michigan College of Mines in Houghton Michigan his father obtained title to the Cosmopolite mine. The mine was situated near the head of Garrote Creek in the hills between the Divide Cemetery and Merrell Road. A 10-stamp mill, formerly known as the Cross or Anita mill, belonged to the mine. Early in the 1900s, an article in the Union Democrat states “The Cosmopolite near Groveland was to have started up this week. The mine has been lying idle for a year, though at the time of closing down the rock was said to have been very good. Owner J. M. Merrill of San Francisco is on the ground and intends to give the vein a long and thorough shaking up. From fifteen to twenty men will be employed. The claim is equipped with a good hoist and five-stamp mill.”

The Merrell’s maintained their home in Oakland until the death of Elizabeth in May, 1905. Millard worked as a mining engineer in Montana and South Dakota before he married Eva Jane Edwards (formerly Mrs. Roy Mills) in 1907 and the two of them moved to Groveland. Josiah (Millard’s 78 year old father) lived with them until his death April 28, 1913 and he’s buried in the Divide Cemetery.

Although Millard and Eva had no children they raised Eva’s granddaughter Byronel Beatrice Ogden as their own. Eva’s daughter by her first marriage, Genevieve Mills, married Charles Gordon Ogden (son of Byron and Mary (Nye) Ogden) and bore Byronel before she died at the age of 17. Both the Ogden and Nye families were early settlers of this area. Byronel was born in 1910 and attended Groveland schools and Sonora High. She married Alvin Lindsay Myers when she was 18 years old and they lived in Moccasin Village where Alvin worked as a clerk at the hydro electric plant. Unfortunately the marriage did not last and she later married George Fletcher. Byronel died in Groveland in1955 and is buried in the family plot in the Divide Cemetery.

Continuing his work as owner and supervisor of the Cosmopolite Mine, Millard also served as Judge of the Groveland Judicial District Court from 1922 to 1926 and served as Chairman of the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors as well as President of the California Supervisors Association. He was also instrumental in the formation of Groveland’s Community Services District.

It was shortly after the Merrells moved from their home (at the intersection of Merrell Road and Highway 120) to Modesto that Eva died in 1962. She was the daughter of George and Martha (Wilkenson) Edwards and was born in San Francisco in 1874. She was a charter member of the Sonora Seventh Day Adventist Church and a member of the Aronos Club. The widower Millard, residing in a Modesto rest home, died seven years later. Both are buried in the family plot in the Divide Cemetery. He appeared on the census of 1910 at Twp 3, Tuolumne Co., CA.2 He appeared on the census of 1920 at San Francisco Co., CA.6 He was Served as Justice of the Peace in 1922 at 3rd Twp., Tuolumne Co., CA.7 On February 9, 1929 the Union Democrat reported that John B. DeMartini was among those called from the 3rd Township to serve as a Petty Juror.1 He appeared on the census of 1930 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., CA; Gold miner.8 He was Tuolumne Co. Supervisor between 1936 and 1960.7 He appeared on the census of 1940 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., CA; County Supervisor.9

Redskin attempts to criminally assault prominent young lady of Groveland

A brutal attempt was made late last Sunday afternoon by a burly Indian known as Jack Barry to ravish Miss Annie Meyer, a white girl 22 years old. Nothing but her presence of mind and wit prevented the fellow who is about 35 years of age and of prodigious strength, from accomplishing his purpose.

Miss Meyer had driven to Groveland in the morning from her home, a distance of about four miles, left an order at the store for some groceries, and then continued on to Deer Flat to visit friends. It was late in the afternoon when she returned to Groveland and secured her purchases and growing dusk when she left the town for home. Three-quarters of a mile had been traversed when at a lonely point in the road Barry, who lay in wait behind a rock, suddenly leaped up, seized the bits of the horses and stopped them. He then dragged the terrified and screaming girl from the wagon to the ground and there attempted to violate her. She fought as best she could, screaming at the top of her voice all the while, when the Indian whipped a knife from his pocket, which he brandished before her face, at the same time threatening to cut her throat if she didn't lie still. It was then that her wits came to Miss Meyer's aid. She begged the would-be ravisher to allow her to get up and away from the road, promising to accompany him to some isolated spot. Barry agreed to this and the two started up the hill. When they had gone a short distance the girl turned as quick as a flash and ran like a deer back to the wagon, into which she jumped and began frenziedly lashing the horses. The startled animals started off on a gallop, but not a moment too soon. The Indian just managed to get within reach of the rear wheel, which he seized and clung to as long as he could.

The news of the attempted assault went through Groveland and surrounding country like wildfire. Threats of lynching were heard on all sides and only the lack of a leader prevented them from being executed. Barry was arrested that night at the Big Creek rancheria by Constable DeMartini, who was accompanied by John Meyer, brother of Annie Meyer, and Supervisor Sylvester Carlon, her uncle. The Indian was found lying on the floor in one of the cabins, surrounded by several other redskins and half-breeds, among them his squaw. He was apparently dead drunk, but when the officer and assistans attempted to take him out he resisted vigorously, but was finally handcuffed and landed in the branch jail at Groveland. While reisitng arrest he repeatedly asserted that he had done nothing, but had come to the rancheria a 5 o'clock with Charlie Hill, a half-breed. He called on his father-in-law, an Indian known as Tom, to verify the statement, but the old man calmly told him he was lying. Near where Barry lay on the floor was a jug partly filled with whisky.

Barry was identified by Miss Meyer as her assailant. A young man who came up the rod shortly before the assault also identified the Indian as the man he had seen standing in the road and whom he passed.

The Indian's preliminary exminiation was held in Groveland Tuesday before Justice DeFerrari, District Attorney Holland conducting the prosecution. The prisoner was held over for trial in the Superior Court and Wednesday was brought to the county jail.

Miss Annie Meyer is one of most highly esteemed young ladies in the Groveland district. She is a daughter of Henry Meyer, and niece of Richard Meyer, proprietor of the Groveland hotel.

Alexander Kirkwood was the son of Thomas Kirkwood and Elizabeth Gilchrist.2 Baptismal records show that Alexander Kirkwood was born before 6 January 1824 at Bo'Ness, Linlithgow, Scotland. This conflicts with data on his tombstone which show he was 'age 44' at birth and a 'Native of Stirlingshire'.1,3 He was christened on 6 January 1824 at Bo'Ness, Linlithgow, Scotland.4 He was christened on 8 February 1824 at Slamannan, Stirling, Scotland; Most likely IGI entry: Alexander, chr 08 FEB 1824 Slamannan, Stirling, Scotland. Son of Thomas Kirkwood, Elizabeth Gilchrist.

He appeared with his father and step-mother on the census of 6 June 1841 at Corbie Hall, Bo'ness, Linlithgow, Scotland. Alexander worked as an Agricultural Laborer.11 He appeared on the census of 6 April 1851 at Dunipace, Stirling, Scotland.12 He was filed a Declaration of Intention for Naturalization in February 1855 at Tuolumne Co., California; Declaration of Intention filed.13 A ship's passenger list posted at Ancestry.com reports that "Alex Kirkwood, age 41 and Mrs. Kirkwood, age 21 arrive New York from Glasgow, Scotland 30 June 1857." Alexander would have been about 33 at the time, but Margaret would have been 21.

Margaret Dick, by then Margaret Priest, reported in the 1900 census that she came to the US in 1857. If she is the Margaret Dick cited in the marriage record above, then she came to the US almost immediately after her marriage. Family files submitted to the Groveland Museum by Wally Anker say that the Kirkwoods arrived in Tuolumne Co. in 1853 (sic). This is not supported by other documentation. Dickinson says, "They came via the Isthmus of Panama, arrived at Big Oak in 1858, and built a miners' supply store on the edge of a ridge overlooking Moccasin Creek."; Margaret Dick, by then Margaret Priest, reported in the 1900 census that she came to the US in 1857. Her mother was a spirit dealer, meaning that she ran a pub. Margaret must have learned at her mother's knee the fine arts of being a hostess and welcoming guests.13

John Carlaw was christened on 7 November 1852 at Muiravonside, Stirling, Scotland.1 He was the son of John Carlaw and Janet (Dick) Carlaw.1 John Carlaw married Frankie Ella (Logan) Carlaw, daughter of Mr. (?) Logan and Miss (?) Kille, between 1882 and 1886; John Carlaw, born in California in 1898, is a known nephew of Andrew Carlaw, brother of John Carlaw. John Carlaw, born 1898, is the known son of Frankie Ella Carlaw. Both these facts come for the 1910 census, Sacramento CA, Andrew Carlow (sic) household. John Carlaw's 1995 Sacramento Co.,
California death registration tells us that his mother's maiden name was Logan. Therefore, the wife of John Carlaw, brother of Andrew Carlaw, was Frankie Ella (Logan) Carlaw.2,3 John Carlaw died between 1898 and 1909; Probably in Sacramento area where John and Andrew Carlaw operated Sacramento Granite and Marble Works.
He and Andrew Carlaw immigrated circa 1881; Margaret (Dick) Kirkwood Priest bore no children of her own. She had left two nephews in Scotland -- John and Andrew Carlaw -- who also emigrated to California as young men, first "reported" to Auntie Priest in the Tuolumne hills, then moved to Sacramento where they established a stone masonry business. Among other structures, the Carlaw brothers built the large redstone U. S. Post Office at 7th and K Streets in Sacramento. The building, since torn down, was the Central Valley Project headquarters of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1937 to 1950. Philip Dickson had an office there on the 2nd floor.4

Andrew was enumerated as "single" in 1910. The marriage was possibly in Truckee where her father was a prominent citizen; in Reno NV where her brother was a prominent citizen; or in Sacramento where the groom lived. Andrew Carlaw died in 1935 at Sacramento Co., CA.2
He appeared on the census of 1861. He appeared on the census of 1871. He and John Carlaw immigrated circa 1881; Margaret (Dick) Kirkwood Priest bore no children of her own. Philip Dickson had an office there on the 2nd floor.3 Andrew Carlaw immigrated in 1881; per 1910 and 1920 census. He and Alexander Dick appeared on the census of April 1881 at Polmont, Stirling, Scotland.4 Andrew Carlaw was naturalized in 1887; per 1910 and 1920 census' -- but where? He and Janet "Jessie" (Carlaw) Corcoran Andrew Carlaw was present at the marriage of Jessie Carlaw and John
Corcoran. Was he Jessie's older brother? If yes, this strengthens the argument that Jessie F. Corcoran and Janet Fleming Carlaw are the same person. on 22 June 1899 at San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California.5 Andrew Carlaw witnessed the marriage of Daniel Corcoran and Janet "Jessie" (Carlaw) Corcoran on 22 June 1899 at San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California.5 Andrew Carlaw appeared on the census of 1900. He was Sacramento Marble and Quarry Works, "Carlaw Brothers". See Sacramento Blue Book, 1902. in 1902 at 10th and R Street, Sacramento, Sacramento Co., California. He appeared on the census of 1910 at Sacramento, Sacramento Co., California; Andrew is head of household and single.6 He appeared on the census of 2 January 1920 at 120 N Street, Sacramento, Sacramento Co., California; Wally Anker confirms in Nov 2005 THAT THE ANDREW CARLAW IN SACRAMENTO IS THE SON OF JOHN CARLAW AND JANET DICK.7
