John Corcoran was born in 1825 at County Cork, Ireland.1,2 He married Catherine (Hines) Corcoran, daughter of Martin Hines and Catherine (Sweeney) Hines, on 8 December 1856. Per HRC researcher Peggy Andrews, they were likely married in Louisiana, although she has not yet found the marriage record. Note that in Aug 1856 a "tropical cyclone" (hurricane?) swept through the Louisiana Gulf Coast and New Orleans was severely hit. This was the likely precipitator of the couple's move to California.3

John Corcoran died on 25 September 1889 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California. The family story, told by Wally Anker, says that John Corcoran died at what was then the Raboul Store in Groveland. After Mass in Big Oak Flat he had gone by wagon into Groveland "for a bite to eat". On leaving the establishment, he was kicked in the head by one of his team, leaving him obviously very seriously injured. Word was sent to Sonora to bring back a doctor, and John was taken into the store -- which, among other things, sold coffins. John died before the doctor arrived. Because he had gone to Mass, the descendants believed he died on a Sunday. In fact, he died on a Wednesday.1,4 He was buried in 1889 at Deer Creek, Tuolumne Co., California; Our Lady of Mt Carmel Cemetery?1
He immigrated in 1845 to New Orleans, Louisiana.5 He and Catherine (Hines) Corcoran lived circa 1858 at California.6 Declaration of Intention for naturalization was filed in Sacramento, California 8 Jan 1858, although the family believes the couple were living in Stockton at the time. A copy of the declaration is in the hands of the Anker family, descendants of John and Catherine (Hines) Corcoran. John Corcoran and Catherine (Hines) Corcoran appeared on the census of 1860; NEED 1860 census transcription.
