    Harris Merel Smith was a native of South Dakota. After graduating from Parker High School, he worked with his older brother to learn carpentry. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and served in Europe during World War II. He eventually moved from the Midwest to Southern California, where he married his high school sweetheart, Helen Cleland, and raised three daughters.
    In 1961, he and his family moved to Tuolumne County, where he worked as a general building contractor, including a remodeling of the Gunn House Hotel and construction of the Summit View Apartment complex. The family moved to Groveland in 1970 when he contracted with Boise Cascade to build a number of projects associated with the development of the Pine Mountain Lake subdivision and he continued to build homes in the Groveland area until his retirement in 2002.
    Mr. Smith is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Larry Moore, of Sonora, Vicki and Lew West, of Groveland, and Lori and Dan Delih, of Oakdale; three grandsons, seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
