    Former La Grange resident Marvin Lester "Barney" Varain died Jan. 23 at his Modesto home. He was 84. He grew up in La Grange. During his life, his many occupations included being a working cowboy, rodeo cowboy, bronco buster, United Airline machinist, correctional officer at Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy, and a casino/hotel security officer for the last 25 years at the MGM, Bally and Reno Hilton.
    During the summers, he worked at Kennedy Meadows Pack Station for several years, as well as for different ranchers. He also attained the lieutenant rank as an officer in the U.S. Army Air corps, and was a World War II veteran. He had lived in several western states and had recently returned to California.
    Mr. Varain is survived by his wife, Rose Bell of Modesto; sons, Charles and Randy Varain; a daughter, Karen Taveras; sisters, Gussie Nicols of Citrus Heights and Rosalee Pritchard of Turlock; a brother, Glenn Varain of La Grange; several grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo Varain and Vida Morton-Varain; a sister, Stella Painter; a brother, Stanley Varain; and a stepson, Francois Ledoux.
    Services were heald at La Grange citizens Cemetery. Pallbearers for the services were Anthony Ledoux, Brian Ledoux, Theresa Habit, Angelique Varain, Edward Lombrana and Brandon Baba. Honorary pallbearers were Eva, Christopher, Andrew, Brandy, Casey, Victoria, Kristina Ledoux, Stephanee Hamond, Kristian and Jose Morales, and Nicollette Millward. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Community Hospice, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA 95356. McHenry Chapel-Franklin & Downs handled arrangements.

He was a member of the Calaveras Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a charter member of the La Grange Rodeo Association and La Grange Museum.
    Mr. Varain is survived by his wife, Betty J. Varain, of La Grange; children, Bob and Norman Varain, both of La Grange; grandchildren, Rick Varain, of San Andreas, and Meggan Leitaker, of La Grange; sister, Eva Nichols, of Citrus Heights; and two great-grandchildren.
    A viewing is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday in La Grange. Donations can be made to Hospice of the Sierra, 20100 Cedar Road North, Sonora, CA 95370.
