Subject: Re James/Oneil family Big Oak Flat /Deer Flat

Greetings

I am trying to research my Maternal Grandmother's family from a distance here in Hertfordshire UK. I notice in your list of family names James is one that comes up.
My ancester John Price James born13 Oct 1854 (Salt Lake City) married Mary O'Neil who was born in Big Oak Flat 4th April 1862 , I'm not sure when they married but their first child Hubert was born in 1887 .
John died in 1919 and is buried in Groveland.
Mary James nee O'Neil died in 1946
I know that the family had a homestead /ranch at Deer Flat.
Any information or pointers you can give me would be really helpful.
My Grandmother Margaret Gertrude James used to tell of going to school on horseback in possibley Big Creek ranch or Deer Flat i'm not sure.
But she was born in 1896 so the picture of the school at Deer Flat is certainly like it would have abeen in her time.
sorry to ramble
look forward to hearing from you
Jane Mellors

Ta-Dah! Here's what I was able to sleuth out about Kathy Brown's illusive "Siss James"!

I can send her copies directly, if you'd prefer, but I wanted to share it with you first
[PS -- Her husband was a "Merchant Tailor". Maybe that's why she looks so "elegant" in that photo]

Enjoy!

MARY ELLEN (JAMES) SIMPSON
Mary Ellen (“Ella”) JAMES was born near Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne, California on
13 May 1867, one of only 2 known daughters of John B. JAMES and Mary M..PRYCE,
emigrants from Wales. Welsh, as well as English, was spoken in their home. Mary had 6
brothers, all older than she. The three closest to her in age were Llewellin, William, and
Arthur. Her father was a Farmer, and their family was still living in Tuolumne County,
CA in June 1880.
On 12 Apr 1890, using her nickname of “Ella”, a Marriage License was issued in
Modesto, Stanislaus County for Mary’s marriage to Sims Dymus (or Dynes) SIMPSON,
born 7 Mar 1861 in Scotland, who arrived in the US about 1881 (or possibly a few years
earlier). A Tailor by trade, specializing in Men’s Suits, he was also residing in Modesto at
the time. The couple were married that same day by Henry C. GILLINGHAM, Pastor of
the Presbyterian Church of Modesto. It was the first marriage for both of them. Sims
became a fully-naturalized US citizen shortly thereafter, in 1891.
By June 1900, the couple were sharing a rented home at 622 N. Douty St. in
Hanford, Lucerne township, Kings County where Sims was now a “Merchant Tailor”.
After 10 years of marriage, the couple still had not had any children, and (as far as is
