    Born in Riverbank, she was raised in Big Oak Flat and as a young adult lived in Coulterville. She went on to work as a cosmetology instructor in Richmond and Concord for many years.
    After retiring in 1978, she moved back to Big Oak Flat where she belonged to the Rebekah Lodge, of which she was a lifetime member, and did other volunteer and charity work.
    Mrs. Black is survived by her six nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel Black; son, Kenneth Black; and siblings, Dorothy Ruby and Harold Eaton.
    A service of remembrance is scheduled for 2 p.m. July 10 at the Odd Fellows Hall in Big Oak Flat.
    Nadeau Family Funeral Home in Vacaville is handling arrangements.

    Harold W. Eaton, Oct. 17, 1921 — Feb. 18, 2009

    Lifelong Big Oak Flat resident Harold W. Eaton died Feb. 18 at a Sonora care home. He was 87. Mr. Eaton was born and raised in Big Oak Flat in the home where he spent most of his life. After graduating from Sonora High School in 1939, he moved to Los Angeles, where he served an apprenticeship as an automotive machinist. He returned to Tuolumne County in 1946 and went to work for the City and County of San Francisco’s Hetch Hetchy Project. He remained there for 35 years, until his retirement. He was a member of the Calaveras Gem and Mineral Society.

    Mr. Eaton is survived by his daughter, Claudia Eaton, of Sequim, Wash.; his son, Jerry Eaton, of Vacaville; and his sister, Winifred Black, of Vacaville.

    A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on March 7 at the Odd Fellows Hall in Big Oak Flat. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

    George and Avis Gookin, members of a longtime Groveland area family, were killed this morning in an accident on Highway 120 near Oakdale.
    The Gookins died instantly when their pickup truck was struck by another at 6:50 a.m. at Highway 120 and Enterprise Rd. the highway patrol's Stockton office reported.
    Mr. Gookin, 79, was turning the truck left onto the highway when it was struck broadside by a pickup truck and camper driven by Robert Goddard, 25, who suffered a minor injury, the report said.
    Mrs. Gookin, 69, had recently been hospitalized in Oakdale.
    The Gookins are survived by three sons, Tom and Ed Gookin of Oakdale and David Gookin of Marysville, George Gookin's three brothers, John, Bill and Harry Gookin, live in the Groveland area, and his siter, Minnie Ures, lives in Vallejo.
    The couple also is survived by many nieces and nephews.
    the Gookins, who raised cattle for more than 40 years, were both born to Gold Rush families. George's parents, Albert and Rose Gookin, were living at Don Pedro when he was born in 1908. Avis, born in 1918 to Alfred and Lillian Beck, was a year old when she moved with her parents from Trona, San Bernardino County, to a log cabin her father build on Ferretti Rd.
    Avis worked for a time at the Cliff House Resort at Rainbow Pool on the Tuolumne River and at the Charlotte Hotel in Groveland.
    George had started in the cattle business when he met Avis while stopping at the Charlotte Hotel. They were married in Reno in 1937.
    They bought a ranch on Ferretti Rd. in 1940 and for years led their herds to a summer range on Duckwall Ridge east of tuolumne.
    Funeral arrangements are pending.

Lifelong Tuolumne County resident Ethel Virginia Gookin died Monday at a Sonora hospital. She was 87.

She was born on Big Hill Family Ranch, and later lived in Moccasin and Big Oak Flat prior to her move to Groveland. She was a homemaker and a rancher with her husband at the Gookin Ranch in Groveland, where she had lived for more than 50 years.

She was involved in her children's activities including 4-H and FFA, and especially enjoyed gardening. She was elected to the Groveland School Board and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary. She graduated from Sonora High School in 1936.

She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had most recently lived in Tuolumne.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, John and Lynn Gookin, and Louis and Chris Gookin, all of Columbia; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Dave Blake, of Tuolumne; grandchildren, Brett and Sean Gookin, of the Bay Area, Chad Gookin and Tamara Flood, both of Oakdale, Dana Owens, of Turlock, Frank, Scott and Pete Gookin, all of Columbia, and Michael Blake, of Elk Grove; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Gookin, in 1989; a son, Joe Gookin; brothers, Walter, Raymond, Roy, Clyde, Hurley, Glenn and Bob Montgomery; and sisters, Ester Smith and Velma Madsen.

     Harry Albert Gookin married Pauline Mae (Zucchella) Gookin; Since they were both long-time county residents by the time they were married, it is likely that Pauline and Harry were married in Tuolumne County.3 Harry Albert Gookin was born on 16 June 1920 at Moccasin, Tuolumne Co., California.4,5 He was the son of Albert Millard Gookin and Rose (Segale) Gookin.2 Harry Albert Gookin died on 20 November 1999 at Tuolumne Co., CA, at age 79.3,6

    Longtime Tuolumne County resident Pauline Mae Gookin died Monday at a Sonora hospital. She was 82.
    She was born in the small mining town of Alleghany, Sierra county, and had lived in Tuolumne County since she was 2. She was the youngest of eight children born in Domnick and Elizabeth Zucchella.
    She later married Harry Gookin and together they operated the Gookin Heart Valley Ranch. The Heart V brand is the oldest registered brand in California.
    She worked the ranch and enjoyed feeding the cattle until earlier this year. She also enjoyed growing flowers, vegetable gardening and reading the Bible.
    She is survived by her brother, Clarence Zucchella, of Sacramento; and numerous nieces and nephews including caregiver, Dolores Hodges, of Twain Harte, and Ronnie Zucchella and Gayle Carlson, both of Sacramento.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Albert Gookin, in 1999.
    A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home. Burial is scheduled at Mountain Shadow Cemetery. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

    Born in Chinese Camp, to Albert and Rose Segale Gookin, she was the fourth of six children, born to members of pioneer ranching families from the Groveland, Priest-Coulterville and Moccasin areas.
    She attended Spring Gulch Grammar School and graduated from Sonora High School in 1931.
    She met Mike Ures in Livermore, and the couple married on June 23, 1933, in Reno, Nev.
    They lived throughout California while he worked for PG&E. Their son, Mike, was born in Montebello, Los Angeles County.
    In 1941, they moved to Vallejo where he worked for the Mare Island shipyard until his retirement.
    In 2000, they moved to a care facility in the Fairfield-Vacaville area.
    She is survived by her son, Michael Ures, of Oakdale; grandchildren, Wayne Ures, of Paso Robles, Lisa Krach, of Phoenix, and Leah Cook, of Benicia; and five great-grandchildren.
    Mrs. Ures was preceded in death by her husband, Mike, in 2007; brothers, George, John, Bill and Harry Gookin; and sister, Stella Stubblefield.
