John Sargent proceeded to the scene of the accident on the morning of the 19 and brought down the body reaching here about midnight of the same date and deposited the remains of deceased in the Hall of Yosemite Lodge #97 at Big Oak Flat from which place deceased was duly interred June 20 at 1 o'clock pm by the Lodge. Bro J.C. McLaughlin acting as Marshall and Bros Foot, Bruschi, Murrow and Bros from Coulterville Lodge as Pall-bearers.

     William O'Neill also went by the name of "Billy" O'Neil.4 He Occasionally spelled O'Neil. He appeared on the census of 1870 as 9-year-old Wm. in the household of Mrs. Margaret (Carmody) O'Neill at Township 4, Tuolumne Co., California; CAUTION: May not be Margaret O'Neill and her children.5 William O'Neillwas first listed as a 19-year-old unmarried son, then x-ed out from the census of 1880 in the household of Margaret (Carmody) O'Neil Ballentine at 4th Township, Tuolumne Co., California.6 William O'Neill was a witness In Sonora on business with John M. Phelan on 26 March 1892.7

     Mrs. Margaret (Carmody) O'Neill was born in March 1829 at Ireland.4 She was the daughter of James Carmody and Mary (Burke) O'Donnell Carmody.2,3 Mrs. Margaret (Carmody) O'Neill married William O'Neill before 1860.5

Tuolumne Co. Marriage Registers show that James Ballentine and Mrs. Margaret O'Neill were married 6 Jan 1874. The Sacramento Daily Bee reported in their Monday Evening edition of 12 Jan 1874 that the marriage of James Ballentine to Margaret O'Neill had occurred at Deer Flat, Tuolumne County. No date was given.6,7 Mrs. Margaret (Carmody) O'Neill died on 27 May 1916 at Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California, at age 87.4 She was buried at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California; Not in the Burden index.8

They had a good camp with a forno, or oven, to bake bread in. It was still there a few years ago, but fallen in. One brother would stay in th camp to clean up the dishes and get things ready for lunch while the others went down to the claim to work. One morning it was our grandfather's turn to stay in camp. When he went to the claim he found that a cave-in had occurred which broke Boss' legs and killed Louis. The site, just above the new bridge on the highway, was always called "Italian Diggings", but I understand someone in the Forest Service has seen fit to rename it "Rocky Bar" -- very original. I asked why, and smeone told me it was done to avoid confusion as there was already an Italian Bar and and Italian Camp. ...

B. Musante and Mrs. Theresa L. Musante, circa 1898 at Escalon, Stanislaus Co., California; The 1910 census where the family is enumerated with Mary's parents says they had been married 11 years, suggesting they were married in late 1898 or early 1899.5,6 Giavonni (Giambattista) DeFerrari died on 27 October 1947 at Alameda Co., California.1,7 He was buried at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California.1
     Giavonni (Giambattista) DeFerrari was also known as G B DeFerrari.     Born in Cherry Hill, Ark., to Mae Dawn and Naaman Egger, as a child he moved to Sugar Pine where he was raised with his two brothers.
    He graduated from Sonora High School in 1956 and attended Modesto Junior College.
    In 1961, he married Florence Gray, and shortly after began working as a powerhouse operator for Hetch Hetchy Water and Power, where he worked for 28 years.
    While he was working at Hetch Hetchy the couple lived at Early Intake and Moccasin.
    After his retirement in 1992, the couple moved to Groveland and then Coulterville.
    He volunteered for the Sonora Police Department and at the Tuolumne County Senior Center. He was a Christian.
    He enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Sugar Pine near his childhood home, gold mining, gardening, spending time with his family and helping others.
    Mr. Egger is survived by his wife of 51 years, Florence Egger, of Coulterville; mother, Mae Dawn Egger, of Sugar Pine; children and their spouses, Dawn and Mat Mariscal, of Coulterville, Tammy Egger, of Moccasin, and Rob and Joanna Egger, of Sonora; grandchildren, Dawnelle Dutton, of Groveland, Derek Mariscal, of San Diego, Hillary Mariscal, of Coulterville, and Dorian, Grayson and Gavin Egger, all of Sonora; brothers and their wives, Ernie and Mary Egger, of Soulsbyville, and Gary and Kathy Egger, of Tuolumne; and two great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his father, Naaman Egger.
    A celebration of life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel in the Pines Church in Twain Harte.

Groveland, May 31, Mrs. Violet Edna EMERSON, widow of Dr. Thomas EMERSON of San Francisco, was killed instantly on the Priest Grade road on the way to Hetch Hetcy dam Tuesday when the stage in which she was riding overturned and rolled 200 ft. down an embankment. The driver, John GRAY, was injured seriously, and his son, John GRAY Jr. 18 years old, received a broken left hand. The steering gear of the stage broke, Gary said.
Mrs. EMERSONS body will be shipped to Stockton tomorrow, Gary carries the mail between Chinese Camp and Big Oak Flat.

    Groveland, May 31, Mrs. Violet Edna Emerson, widow of Dr. Thomas Emerson of San Francisco, was killed instantly on the Priest Grade road on the way to Hetch Hetchy dam Tuesday when the stage in which she was riding overturned and rolled 20 feet down an embankment. The driver, JOHN GRAY, was injured seriously and his son JOHN GRAY Jr, 18 years old, received a broken left hand. The steering gear of tohe stage broke, Gray said. Mrs. Emerson's body will be shipped to Stockton tomorrow. Gray carries the mail between Chinese Camp and Big Oak Flat.

     Gerald Dean Kraus was born on 21 February 1933 at Iowa; Is he the Gerald D Kraus whose birth is recorded in Ohio as 22 Feb 1933 and whose mother's maiden name is given as FRANK?3,4 He married Elaine (Gray) Kraus Nickley, daughter of John Leslie Gray and Fayma (White) Gray, on 1 June 1956 at Stanislaus Co., California.5 Gerald Dean Kraus and Elaine (Gray) Kraus Nickley were divorced in March 1968 at Tuolumne Co., California; A separate entry shows date of June 1972, also in Tuolumne County. Gerald Dean Kraus died on 4 September 1979 at Tuolumne Co., California, at age 46.4 He was buried in 1979 at Divide Cemetery 2:751-1, Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California.6

    James H. Nickley Jr., a respected general contractor in the Groveland area died Monday, August 5 in Sonora after a brief illness. Mr. Nickley was born in 1936 in Sonora to James Harold “Slim” Nickley Sr. and Bessie Farman Nickley and attended Jacksonville School and Sonora High School. The family lived in Jacksonville, where Jim Nickley’s father, always known as “Slim” Nickley, was a foreman at the Eagle Shawmut Mine. The Nickley family has deep pioneering roots, including generations of miners and ranchers in Tuolumne and Amador Counties, dating back to right after the Civil War, when their Nickley/ Nichley and Manley ancestors came to California.
    Jim was rightfully proud of his military service. He served three years in the Army Infantry, stationed in Germany. In the spring of 1955, Jim Nickley, as a tank driver, with the 723rd Tank Battalion at Fort Irwin took part in Exercise Desert Rock VI, near Las Vegas.
    Mr. Nickley helped construct the old Twain Harte Lodge. He was a skilled carpenter General Building Contractor in 1969, and was a homebuilder in the Groveland-Pine Mountain Lake area for nearly 40 years. Mr. Nickley built much landmark construction around Groveland, and completed his last home in the Pine Mountain Lake Airport area in 2006 before retiring. Mr. Nickley was a lifelong outdoorsman who loved nature, hunting, fishing and sharing the history of Tuolumne County with others.
    Mr. Nickley is survived by Sherry Nickley, son Randy Nickley, Greg Kraus, Graden Kraus, and Deanae Kraus, sister, Lora Lowry, Aunt Annie Freeman and a large extended family, including grandchildren, nieces, nephews and brothersand sisters-in- law. His kind heart will be missed always by his many friends, and by his good dog “Slim”. He was predeceased by his parents, wife Elaine in 2006, two sisters, Patricia Ramsey and Betty Holmes, and stepdaughter, Melinda Keist. At Mr. Nickley’s request, there will be no services. The family requests that you consider a donation to the Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society or to the American Cancer Society to honor Jim’s memory.
