James H. Nickley Jr., a respected general contractor in the Groveland area died Monday, August 5 in Sonora after a brief illness. Mr. Nickley was born in 1936 in Sonora to James Harold “Slim” Nickley Sr. and Bessie Farman Nickley and attended Jacksonville School and Sonora High School. The Nickley family has deep pioneering roots, including generations of miners and ranchers in Tuolumne and Amador Counties, dating back to right after the Civil War, when their Nickley/ Nichley and Manley ancestors came to California.

He was a skilled carpenter General Building Contractor in 1969, and was a homebuilder in the Groveland-Pine Mountain Lake area for nearly 40 years. Mr. Nickley built much landmark construction around Groveland, and completed his last home in the Pine Mountain Lake Airport area in 2006 before retiring. Mr. Nickley was a lifelong outdoorsman who loved nature, hunting, fishing and sharing the history of Tuolumne County with others.
Mr. Nickley is survived by Sherry Nickley, son Randy Nickley, Greg Kraus, Graden Kraus, and Deanae Kraus, sister, Lora Lowry, Aunt Annie Freeman and a large extended family, including grandchildren, nieces, nephews and brothersand sisters-in- law. His kind heart will be missed always by his many friends, and by his good dog “Slim”. He was predeceased by his parents, wife Elaine in 2006, two sisters, Patricia Ramsey and Betty Holmes, and stepdaughter, Melinda Keist. At Mr. Nickley’s request, there will be no services. The family requests that you consider a donation to the Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society or to the American Cancer Society to honor Jim’s memory.
