Longtime Groveland resident and one of Groveland’s well-loved community leaders, Mary Webb Laveroni, died May 21 at Avalon Care Center in Sonora at the age of 97.
Mary was passionate about community education, health, and economy and was instrumental in bringing many services to the Groveland area throughout
her life. She moved to Groveland 1934 (when she was 20 years old) and met her husband George Laveroni when he delivered milk to her door.
Mary helped secure water from Hetch Hetchy Reservoir for GCSD customers who were using iron-rich water from the Del Monte Mine. She was a founding member and charter director of GCSD for 26 years, 15 years as the chair. Mary also served actively on the BOF-Groveland school board, was chair of the Southern Tuolumne County Planning Commission, The Tuolumne County Education Board, and the Columbia College Community Advisory Board. She was a founding director of Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society as well as their president for many years. Mary selflessly donated the land and financed the construction of the Groveland Family Medical Clinic, as well as donating the land for the Groveland Ambulance Station in 2002. In 2003, Wayside Park renamed “Mary Laveroni Community Park” in her honor; known locally as “Mary’s Park.” As well as raising a family, Mary and her husband George, operated the Iron Door Saloon, a hardware store, two sawmills and lumber businesses for nearly 50 years.
Mary lost her mother, Mary Regina Sauter, when she and her sister were very young, and they were raised by their devoted father, Pinkney Howell Webb in Oklahoma and Pasadena, California. Mary is remembered by many as a selfl ess, kind, passionate and giving community member who loved welcoming visitors on her back porch for a story under the grapevines.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, George. She is loved, adored and deeply missed by her son, Gary Wilson, daughter Mary Louzador; sister Octavia “Tay” Lefman, grandchildren Michele Montoya, Jake Roberts, Regina Hirsch, Michael Roberts, nephew Phillip Lefman, and eight great-grandchildren. Mary’s warm smile and generous spirit for the Groveland community will always be remembered. Gifts and remembrances can be made to the Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society in her name.
