    YOUNG WOMAN KILLS BRUTAL HUSBAND
Mrs. Grace Irene Varain, after an unhappy married life of almost three years, during which time she suffered many beatings at the hands of her drunken and brutal husband, Julian W Varain, shot and killed him Thursday morning at their home near the Virginia mine, at about 9 o'clock.
The shooting followed one of many quarrels between the young couple which began almost from the date of the marriage continuing up to his death. On the morning of the shooting, Varain returned home in a drunken condition and administered a severe beating to his young wife, strikingi her in such a manner as to badly cut her tongue besides suffering other bruises. Varain was a powerful young man and about 25 years of age. Mrs. Varain is the daughter of Frank Converse and but 19 years of age. The couple were marred in Merced in November 1915, but have made their home near Coulterville. One child resulted from this union.
The sympathy of the entire community, even the members of his immediate family, is with Mrs. Varain, all of whom well know the inhuman treatment she has received. Mrs. Varain was brought to Mariposa yesterday where she will remain until her preliminary examination, which will be held next Wednesday at Coulterville.
The funeral of Varain will be held at Granite Springs today.

Merle (Iverson) Vetch MacSween Heath was also known as Merle (Iverson) Heath. Merle (Iverson) Vetch MacSween Heath was also known as Merle Heath.1 Merle and two girl friends took a 3 1/2-week camping
trip across the northern states in a 1930 Model A Ford. Surviving many adventures, they arrived in Los Angeles as their fi nal destination. Merle went to work as a secretary in the fi lm industry and then for Hughes Aircraft, witnessing the construction of the Spruce Goose!3 As of 1942,her married name was Merle (Iversen) Vetch.4 As of 1950,her married name was Merle (Iversen) Vetch MacSween.5 She was educated circa 1955 at Taft, Kern Co., California.6 1962 was a banner year for Merle. She graduated from college, parted ties with Malcolm, and got a job with Kern County as a social worker, a job she kept for 17 years until she retired in 1978.3 They lived in Bakersfield for a while but decided there had to be a better place, so they started looking. After some years experiencing Kern City, Tehachapi, and Santa Maria, they finally discovered Pine Mountain Lake while on a road trip. They fell in love with the location and amenities and bought a house on Cottonwood Road in 1986.3
Merle and Charles found a home in Pine Mountain and
rooted there. They both became active in community affairs. Charlie eventually became nationally known as The Can Man because he raised $55,000 for the Groveland Library and Museum building collecting aluminum cans. Merle was the thinker and vision maker. After the completion of the library, Merle had the idea and started the ball rolling to create the skate park for the kids of Groveland. She got Charlie involved with collecting cans again. Today there is
a plaque at the park that reads: “Merle and Charlie Heath Skate Park: Dedicated to those with the energy to make the dream come true”…. Charlie passed away in 2007.
When she was younger, Merle was a swimmer, and
was never far from a swimming pool. She took up playing golf with Charlie. Merle’s passion was bridge, and she motivated Charlie to learn how to play. She played bridge with many people in PML for years: at the Lake Lodge, at other’s homes, and fi nally when she could no longer drive comfortably, at her home. After Charlie passed, she hosted a weekly Texas Hold ‘Em poker group. She always enjoyed having people around her.
She loved her church on Foote Street, and the people who she and Charlie had met there over the years. Merle donated money for chairs so Church in the Park could get started. Many people will remember Merle as a very generous person. She always said, “Money isn’t everything and I give a lot of it away.”.3
