Swan Bjorien died on 3 April 1920 at Priest Grade, Tuolumne Co., California.
He Sudden Death at City Hotel:
Swan Bjorien, whose home for a number of years has been the foot of Priest's grade, on the Stanislaus river, died suddenly in Sonora on Friday evening of last week. Bjorien had been ill with pneumonia at his home for a few weeks and while apparently recovering, he was in no condition to care for himself and sought admittance to the hospital. The county automobile was sent after him, but when he had reached this city he concluded that he would not go to the hospital and had Jos. Sylva, the county chauffeur, leave him at the City hotel. He remained by the hotel for a time and finally asked a bystander to escort him to the dining room where he ordered something to eat. While it was being served him he was taken with severe pains and he was assisted back to the lobby, where he utterly collapsed and was dead in a few seconds.
Coroner O'Beirne was notified and took charge of the body. After attempting to locate some of the relatives of the deceased, the funeral was set for Thursday and interment was made in the City cemetery.
Deceased was a native of Sweden and 60 years old. He had lived in the county several years. Of late he was engaged in mining near where he lived.

He is still under treatment at the Hetch Hetchy hospital for burns sustained, but his vision is not impaired. While he was burnt about the face, luckily his eyes were only slightly involved. His worse burn was on his hand, but this promises to eventually heal and the hand be restored to complete use.

on 19 August 1905. He Mountain Homicide. Aged George Jones Shot to Death by George Atherton Last Saturday.
One man in the graveyard and another in jail charged with his murder in "across the river's" contribution to the sensational news of the week.
The dead man is george Jones, and he was shot through the heart Saturday morning by George Atherton. The weapon used was a 22 caliber Winchester rifle, and the scene of the killing a pretty little mountain ranch situated on the Middle fork of the Tuolumne river about twenty miles from Groveland, and owned by Charles and Tom Jones. Although of the same name, these men are in nowise related to the man Coroner Burden found in their corral with a bullet-hole through his lifeless body.
Up to this writing no eye-witness to the killing has come forward -- there probably was none. Charles Gallaher was tow hundred yards from the scene when the tragedy was enacted, and says he heard a single report. Atherton corroborates this, acknowledges that he fired that shot and that it killed Jones. In justification he pleads self-defense, claiming that Jones was the aggressor and endeavored to murder him, when he succeeded in wrestling the weapon from his assailant's hands and with it slaying him.
Word of the shooting and the fact that a corpse lay awaiting his services was received by Coroner Burden Saturday night. At 3:30 o'clock the following morning he was on the road, and by changing horses at Groveland reached the Hones ranch at 2 o'clock in the afternoon and at once proceded to hold an inquest. The dead man lay just where he had fallen when the fatel shot was fired and death had been instantaneous. From lying in the sun portions of Saturday and Sunday it was badly swollen. The effects of the deceased consisted practically of the clothes on his back. There was no money, no letters -- nothing that might throw light on his past or his people except a card showing that he had been a member of Summersville Miners' Union No 87, His last payment of dues was made on October 17, 1902.

Monday morning. He was buried in the Big Oak Flat cemetery.
Jones is spoken of by several who knew him quite well as a harmless, good-natured man when sober, but quarrelsome on the bluff order when drinking. He would work a while and then stay drunk as long as his money lasted.
Atherton was arrested by Constable DeMartini, and locked up the Groveland calaboose. Tuesday morning he was brought to Sonora by the same officer and is now in the county jail. He is said to have told several different stories about the shooting and this variegated verbosity in liable to cause him a lot of trouble in the end. He has retained Attorney F. P. Otis to defend him, and when seen in his cell at the jail by a Union Democrat reporter refused to make a statement or discuss the case, saying that his lawyer had so ordered. Atherton is in a nervous condition bordering on collapse and is unable to sleep unless given doses of chloral. He is well-known in this county, having been born and reared near Rawhide. He is a miner by occupation, 37 years of age, and has worked in various camps through California and Mexico. Before the reporter left his cell Atherton did say that he certainly would not have shot Jones unless he felt justified in doing so. He claims to have been perfectly sober at the time, but said that his victim was under the influence of liquor.
The date of his preliminary examination has not been set, District Attorney Holland being away.
The Union Democrat on 26 August 1905. He Murder Case Dismissed:
George Atherton, charged with the murder of George Jones on the 19th of last month at a ranch twenty miles from Groveland, had his preliminary examination in the latter place Monday before Justice of the Pease Paynter and was discharged. The prisoner, who had been confined in the county jail since the shooting, failed to take the stand in his own behalf, but there were several witnesses and the principal evidence brought out was that Hones was very quarrelsome, particularly on the day of the tragedy, and got only what he was looking for. It appears that he had saddled and bridled a horse belonging to Chas. Jones, owner of the ranch, intending to ride the animal off after having some contemplated trouble with Atherton and other people on or ear the ranch. Atherton, instructed by owner Jones so to do, went and told George Jones not to ride off the horse he had saddled. The evidence went to show that then the trouble commenced, Jones firing a shot or two at Atherton, when the latter wrenched the rifle away and shot him dead. The prisoner was defended by Attorney F. P. Otis.

Edward B. McGee was born in 1850. He died on 4 June 1910 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California; Fatal Accident to a Groveland Farmer:
Edward B. McGee died at Groveland Wednesday as the result of an accident which happened to him while unhitching his team at his ranch near Groveland, Sunday afternoon. He had unhitched the animals from a buckboard which he had been driving and in some manner one of the tugs got caught in a mowing machine which was near by and the horses became frightened and ran away. McGee was either kicked or stepped upon and two of his ribs broken. He was all alone, but managed to get to his house and get into bed where he remained until next morning when the Indian who had been helping him cut hay came to go to work. McGee told the Indian that he was pretty sick and the latter went to Groveland for assistance. McGee was taken to Groveland where he could be cared for, but succumbed to his injuries, the physician ascribing a weak heart as the ultimate cause of his death. The horses ran some distance with the mower and were found the next morning in a ditch with the machine. The deceased was 60 years of age and was a native of Canada. He had lived in Tuolumne county for a number of years and was universally esteemed. The funeral took place Thursday and the interment was in the Divide cemetery.
