Groveland resident Jewell Curry died Sunday at her home. She was 85.
She was born in Hill County, Texas, and had lived in Groveland off and on since 1997.
She married A.J. Curry in 1942 and graduated from Lubbock High School in Texas in 1939. she and her husband attended Abilene Christian University in Texas. Her husband joined the ministry, and she raised six children. He ministered in Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon and California. She earned her associate's degree from Bakersfield College in 1979.
She worked as a food service supervisor for Porterville State Hospital for 23 years and retired in 1981. After her husband died, she assisted other family members going through bereavement.
Her family said she lived with her sister, Ann, for three and a half years and was close to her twin brother and her other siblings.
She enjoyed sewing, traveling, camping and church activities. Her family described her a a very loving and giving person.
She is survived by her daughters, Casundra Peters of Groveland, Jewell Anndra Curry of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Patricia Correira of Jamestown; sons, Thomas Curry of Margate, Fla., David Curry of Toledo, Ore., and John Curry of Modesto; a twin brother, Ewell Booker of Lubbock, Texas; sisters Ann Orr of wilmington, Del., Mary Montandon of Aiken, Texas, and Nelda Shuman of Rio Rancho, N.M.; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband. A.J. Curry, in 1981; her parents, Early Marshal Booker and Jenettie Helena Kay; and brothers, Julian Booker and Marshal Booker.
A service was to be held today at Church of Christ in Sonora. A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Porterville, tulare County.

Robert Maurice "Cowboy Bob" Curry, 66 of Greeley Hill died Dec. 13 at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Curry was born in Spokane, Wash., and had lived in Greeley Hill for the past 26 years. Before that, he lived another 26 years in the Bay Area, all that time working as a paramedic for Silva's Ambulance Service in San Mateo.
He had served in the Army and was also a guide and packer in the Immigrant Wilderness and the Yosemite back country for 20 years. While on a pack trip in the Immigrant Wilderness with Paul and Nancy Girard of concord in 1985, he helped save Nancy's life after her appendix burst. He rode horseback up granite terrain for two hours to find a radio to call for help. Then he rode another three miles to contact the Stanislaus National forest dispatch center. A helicopter was sent to take her to a Sonora hospital.
His family said his love for the mountains sustained him through his long illness.
He liked hunting, fishing and riding horses in the mountains and on a ranch with his grandchildren, where he also worked with leather and repaired saddles. He was a skilled automobile mechanic and also loved music, signing and dancing.
Mr. Curry is survived by his wife, Kay Curry of Greeley Hill; two daughters, Caryn Devoto-Dixon of Greeley Hill and Debbie Curry of Washington; three stepsons, Dana DeVoto of sonora, Scott DeVoto of Tuolumne and Tony Garney of Walla Walla, Wash.; and eight grandchildren, Marvin DeVoto, Braden DeVoto, Brett DeVoto, Brittany Ann Dixon, Brandon Dixon, Tony Frances DeVoto, Bobbi Kay DeVoto and Colun Garner. - [S8] SSDI, KAY FRANCES DEVOTO female born 02 May 1932, died 20 Sep 2010, age 78.
