Elizabeth "Betty" Conger Hammer passed away on August 20, 2010 in Roseville, Calif.
She was born December 4, 1917 in Vallejo, Calif. She was married to Frank Doran Hammer for almost 65 years, until his death in 2006.
She is survived by her two sons, Dennis Hammer and David Hammer, and five grandchildren, Drew Ashby, Michael Ashby, Kimberly Ashby, Ross Hammer, and Nathan Hammer. She is also survived by her "adopted" Japanese daughter, Tomoko Morita. Her daughter, Susan Hammer Ashby, predeceased her.
Betty lived in Orange, Calif., during her childhood. She and Frank raised their children in Altadena and Garden Grove. In 1973 Betty and Frank retired to Groveland, in the Sierra foothills, where they built their house in the woods. They lived an active life; square dancing, rock and mushroom hunting, and participating in many community service projects. Betty loved to hike and she and their children, grandchildren and friends enjoyed many summer backpack trips. One thing she gave to her children and grandchildren is an appreciation for nature and wilderness. She belonged to the Sierra Club for more than 40 years. She loved to travel and went on many trips to countries around the world.
In 1999 Betty and Frank moved to Sonora, Calif., where they could be closer to medical facilities and not have to drive in the snow during the winter. They moved to Wanderlust Loop Road, Sun City, Roseville, Calif., in 2006. The name of the street was very apropos for Betty.
Betty lived to serve others. She devoted her life to her family, friends and community (and her cat, Snoopy). She knitted 140 hats for the homeless and sewed lap quilts for hospital patients. In the last 12 months of her life she made 40 dolls for children who receive cleft palate surgery as part of the Rotary International Rotaplast Project. About 25 of her hand made dolls were given to children in El Salvador in May 2010 and another 15 were completed and ready for delivery when she died.
Betty was loved for her enthusiasm for life and her warm and caring personality. She requested that there not be any memorial service. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society .

Betty died [at Sutter Roseville Medical Center] after a long, productive life. She was born in Vallejo, spent her childhood in Orange CA, and moved to Groveland from Garden Grove in 197e. She is survived by two sons and an adopted daughter. Her husband and her daughter Susan preceded her in death.
Betty and Frank were the earliest Life members of STCHS. Betty was one of our most helpful volunteers. We stitched together our first fundraiser, a baseball cap on which we sewed a blue patch and a red heart. Above the heart we wrote "I" with and magic marker, and below it we put "HISTORY". The sale of these capts was the frst moeny to start our museum/library building fund.....
We lost a friend, a tuly good human being, who was always ready to give and to help. ---Helga Anker.
