The name may be mispelled, but I find no John Alter or John Adler in the directories either, or in the 1850 census. I have however, found a J. Atler or Hartford County who shipped on the Charlotte, out of Newburyport to San Francisco, as noted in the New York Herald for January 26, 1849.

Hi all,
While organizing the old IOOF records, meeting minutes, etc a few years ago for Yosemite Lodge #97 in Big Oak Flat I ran across a notebook that appears to be from maybe the 1920's? Hand-written in pencil, about 10 pages long, it seems to be a brief history of the lodge and some of its earliest members. John Atler is mentioned twice.
1st mention, page 1 -
"John Atler joined Franklin No. 2 Baltimore Maryland in the year of 1822 the second Lodge instituted in the U.S. He passed away April 6th, 1878. 56 years a member"
Then about halfway through the book he's mentioned again -
"April 6th, 1878 Bro John Atler passed away. Bro Atler at the time of his death he was one very few remaining, who were contemporary with Thomas Wildey the Father of the order in America. Bro Atler was made a member of the second Lodge instituted, Franklin No 2 Baltimore Maryland in the year 1822. He joined Yosemite Lodge as an Ancient Oddfellow in September 1860."
That's exactly how it appears in the booklet, missing words, punctuation and all. I don't know who wrote the booklet, when or why, but I thought the whole thing mighty interesting.
Hope it's helpful,
Denise

Hi! Kaen -- Thank you -- I'd missed it because of the "Atter" spelling I guess. Did your friend (Harold?) who found him on the Register 1866-96 find a terminal date after which he was there no longer or have we any indication of a death date? Thanks and thanks again -- Jared

His parents appear to be foreign born
Since he appears to have RE Valued at $200, he might show up on a Tuolumne County Tax List.
It also indicates that he's a citizen of the USA so he might show up on the Great Register.
It's easier for me to correspond with you from my home but I do have access to the few resources we have at the museum. Let me know if I can provide any further assistance.

Our curator, Gordon Norris, responded to your request for information and I will do what I can to help you. I'd also like to acquire information from you that can be used to build a file on the Atler Family for the museum.
I found your genforum entry of 3 Dec 2009 stating that you wanted information on John Atler "after 1860" and that you have his passport application, his 1825 marriage record and some property records in Baltimore.
I trust that by now you've found his 1870 census entry indicating that both his parents were foreign born.
Hope we can assist one another.

Surrounded by his wife and family, Greenville resident Paul Ernest Peet peacefully passed from this life to his eternal home with the Lord, following a valiant battle with cancer, early Friday morning, Sept. 2, 2005, at his residence in Greenville. Born July 31, 1926, in Binghamton, New York, to the late Ernest and Dorretta Peet, he was also raised and educated in Binghamton. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps toward the end of World War II and was again called to active duty during the Korean War where he served as a member of the U.S. Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He settled in California following his discharge from the military and went to work for the Department of Corrections before transferring to the California Youth Authority where he proudly served the residents of California as plant maintenance technician for 15 years. In the late 60s while attending a prayer therapy group at a church in Modesto, he met the former Shirley Ellen Short. The two were united in matrimony on Aug. 18, 1971. The family resided in Modesto until 1986 when they relocated to Greenville. While residing in Greenville, Paul became active with the Greenville Southern Baptist Church, where he often served as an usher. He found great solace in spending time in the outdoors and loved cutting firewood. He gained great pleasure in tending to his home and spending time with his family. Paul is survived by his loving and caring family that includes his wife of just over 34 years, Shirley of Greenville; children David Peet of Vacaville, Timothy Sexton of Bakersfield, Jonathan Sexton of San Antonio, Tex., Judith Marinel of Rio Oso, Sandra Sexton of Modesto, Sharon McCullough of Kingman, Ariz., and Rebecca Hoofard of Gerber; brother, George Peet of Greenville, S. C; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Eric, in 1997 and daughter, Ramona, in 2001. A celebration of Paul's life took place Sept. 6, 2005, followed by interment in the Greenville District Cemetery. An opportunity to express condolences to the family and to sign the memorial guest register is available online at www.fehrmanmortuary.com. The family suggests any remembrances in Paul's honor be made to the Greenville Southern Baptist Church's building fund, c/o Fehrman Mortuary and Crematory, P.O. Box 803, Greenville, CA 95947.
