William R. Baird was born on 27 December 1833 at Scotland.1 He was the son of Dougald Baird. William R. Baird married Margaret (Brodie) Baird, daughter of Thomas Brodie, on 28 November 1889 at Glasgow, Scotland;
Does this marriage date come from Del Brodie? It is more or less consistent with the statement in 1910 that Margaret and William Baird had been married 22 years.2 William R. Baird died on 18 June 1911 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California, at age 77.3,4 He was buried at Divide Cemetery 3:366, Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California.1
Fr/Del Brodie 5/25/11:
Before I talked to you I knew
(a) William Robb Baird was born on December 27 or 29, 1832 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland;
(b) he immigrated to the United States in 1863 or 1868 [Note: A William Baird arrived May 4, 1863 in New York in burthen 1432 on the St. Andrew which sailed from Glasgow, Scotland. He said he was Scottish, a male, 38 years old (born about 1833), a miner, and travelling to San Francisco (year 1863, arrival New York, Microfilm serial M237_227, line 11, list number 364)];
(c) he probably went back to Scotland in 1888 to visit his family and/or find a bride;
and
(d) in the 1900 United States federal census the Bairds were living in Township 3, Tuolume Station, California. Household members were William Baird (age 67), Margaret Baird (age 39), stepson Thomas Anderson (age 17, born 1883), stepson Charles Anderson (age 15, born 1885), Jennie R. Baird (age 11), Anna A. Baird (age 5), and brother Dougald Baird (age 59). Anna A. Baird was born in California. The rest were born in Scotland. William Baird said he immigrated to the United States in 1862 and had been in the states for 48 years and was a naturalized citizen.
His brother Dougald immigrated to the United States in 1868 and had been in the states for 31 years and was a naturalized citizen. The rest came in 1889 and had been in the states for 10 years. Both William and Dougald, but not Margaret, said they were naturalized citizens of the United States. Both William and Dougald listed their occupation as engineer. William said he was renting the house. (Census place: Township 3, Tuolumne, California; roll T623_166, page 2B, enumeration district 126).
Since William Robb Baird was an engineer/miner and he was living Tuolumne County in 1900, I had assume that me moved to Tuolumne County when he arrived back in the United States in 1889. Both of my assumptions appear to be wrong.
While I was in California I obtained a copy of Jennie Baird's application to become naturalized in 1950. In the application she states that they left by ship for the United States on October 4, 1890. If this is correct, then William Baird would have arrived back in California late in 1890, not 1889. Jennie also stated that her Uncle James Brodie travelled with them to the United States. Hence, it is possible that James Brodie's name may show up somewhere in Tuolumne County. By the way, Jennie Baird's actual name is Janet Robb Baird. [Before my trip to California, I never knew that Jennie was actually Janet.]
According to Historic Livermore California by Anne Marshall Homan (2007, p. 37) "Charlie Baird immigrated with his family to the Fresno area in California from Glasgow, Scotland, at the age of four. When he was 12 they moved to Groveland in the Sierra foothills." If this is correct and if William Baird was living with his family in Fresno, then he did not return to the Groveland area until 1898 (i.e., two years before the 1900 census).
I do not know what part of California William Robb Baird was working in when he first arrived in California (i.e., between 1863 and 1888), but I might be able to find him in the 1870 and 1880 United States census. Previously, I found William Baird in the 1841 and 1851 Scotland census.
I did find the location of the Baird Hotel in Groveland, and from a relative I obtained a picture of the Baird Hotel.
I am ready and eager to learn additional information and receive pictures.

Abstract from an article entitled "A Wide Choice for Travelers"
Big Oak Flat and Groveland
Vol 1 No 1 1975
Charlie Baird, better known as a stage driver and livery operator than a hotel keeper, built the Baird Hotel in 1915, after operating the Groveland Hotel for several years.
The first hotel burned and a second was built in 1917. Purchasing the Sheafe hotel in Chinese Camp, he dismanteled it and hauled the lumber to Groveland to construct his two-story hotel. He had a pool hall building on one side (west) of the property. His livery stable was in the yeard behind.
The buildings were dismanteled after the Hetch Hetchy project moved off the hill. Taxes on the empty buildings, as the depression deepened, were too much to bear.

Abstract from an article entitled "Historic Tour - Walker's View of Groveland"
Big Oak Flat and Groveland Vol 1 No 1 1975
Selina Lumsden's home is all that remains of the Baird Hotel buildings that surrounded it. The two-story hotel was on the east, and a structure that served as pool hall, stage depot, and at one time the telephone office, was on the west. The home was originally the dining room and kitchen for the hotel. The hotel was built at the beginning of the Hetch Hetchy days and was dismantled in the 1930's. In the 1870's there was a blacksmith shop on the lot.

Baird Hotel and stage depot, which included a pool hall and the telephone office, are shown in the center of the picture. The livery stable which housed as many as 60 head of horses was behind the buildings, across the creek. Unseen behind the white post fence was the hotel diningroom and kitchen. Of these structures, only the diningroom, converted into a comfortable home occupied by Selina Lumsden (sister-in-law to Charlie Baird) still stands. Seen also is the Groveland Garage, owned at that time by Warren Watson, and the Cassaretto mercantile bulding, today's community hall. At the right is the Cassaretto Store, called the Smith Cash Store at the time the picture was taken in the early 1920's.

In the early 1910’s when Charlie Baird was running the Groveland Hotel, he once put up 54 head of horses one snowy night. “I put the rigs outside, the horses tied heads together so they couldn't’t get to kicking one another. That’s the kind of crowd we had: “When there was a dance at Coulterville Charlie Baird would “take a 6-horse stage, everybody free. And they’d all come when we had a dance.”
Baird's Hotel was dismantled after the Hetch Hetchy days. Today's Community Hall is at the right.
Once again old buildings were refurbished and new ones constructed: the Charlotte Hotel; Sal Ferretti’s new butcher shop, now occupied by Mel Lutt’s Pharmacy; the Cassaretto Mercantile, today’s Community Hall; Charlie Baird’s Hotel,Schroeder's dismantled in the slack years after the mountain division of the Hetch Hetchy project was finished and the facilities and personnel moved to Livermore.

HUNTER FALLS TO DEATH FROM HIGH CLIFF
In the account of the death of James R. WILSON as appears in the Sonora Democrat last week, death was not caused by heart failure but from a fall over a high cliff while hunting in a blinding storm.
The Democrat gives the following account of the accident:
James R. WILSON, a native of this county, aged 45 years, fell to his death from a precipitous bluff in the Lake Elinor country last Sunday.
Last Saturday he and his brother, Wm. H. WILSON, left Groveland on a deer hunting trip into Cherry Valley, where they made camp. Sunday morning he went hunting and about 10 o'clock a shot was heard by his brother. At 2 o'clock in the afternoon an electrical storm, accompanied by a heavy fall of rain and hail, prevailed.
WILSON did not return to camp that night, but that fact did not disturb his brother, who was impressed that he had hunted afar and undoubtedly had found lodgings in some old Hetch Hetchy camp. When he did not show up by noon the next day the brother became uneasy and got word to his brother in law, John MEYER of Groveland, who immediately spread the news, and with a large party of searchers started for the Cherry Valley. The searchers were organized into groups and a systematic hunt was made for the missing man. It was carried on Monday and Tuesday unceasingly between daylight and dark without result. By this time the searchers were convinced that WILSON was ill, injured or dead. The search had been largely made in a section remote from camp. Wednesday morning the 40 men engaged resumed the search. Shortly after leaving the camp, one of the parties, headed by Chas. H. BAIRD and Rico CASSARETTO, noticed an peculiar odor in the air which as they advanced, became more pronounced and they readily conceived it to be that arising from decaying human flesh. They followed the odor and within half a mile of the camp found the dead body of WILSON prostrated upon a sand flat at the bottom of a rocky bluff 40 feet in height. His rifle was leaning against the rocky wall as though he had placed it there while resting. An empty cartridge was in the barrel, indicating that a shot had been fired. An investigation indicated that WILSON had fallen from the crest of the bluff. Assuming that he had fired the shot about 10 o'clock Sunday morning, it must have been a deer, in which event he would of thrown a loaded cartridge from the magazine into the chamber. An examination of the rifle revealed a rocky substance on the hammer showing that it had contacted with a rock and the cartridge had thus exploded. Wilson body bore no bullet wounds. But one side of his face and skull were crushed in, clearly from striking a rock in his downward flight it is surmised that he walked on the bluff at about 2 o'clock when the severe electrical storm, accompanied by a heavy fall of rain and hail, took place across a wide sweep of country in that region. It is assumed that at this time WILSON was hunting on the bluff, a likely place for deer, when the storm broke in all its fury. Pulling his hat tightly down over his head, he started hurriedly for camp, and in the blinding lightning flashes and beating rain and hail, he stepped off the bluff in probably the most unsafe and dangerous spot it presented. In the next instant his body went hurtling down the cliff to the bottom. Instant death must have been his portion. - [S1] CA Birth Index 1905-1995.

Jennie R. Baird was born in 1889 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland; Data from researcher Del Brodie says she was born 13 Feb 1890 at Cumbernauld, Scotland. Cumbernauld was, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica, designated a "new town" in 1956 to accommodate overspill population from Blasgow. It is 14 miles northeast of Glasgow in the center of the Forth-Clyde valley....1,2 She was the daughter of William R. Baird and Margaret (Brodie) Baird.1,2 Jennie R. Baird was born on 13 February 1890 at Cumbernauld, Scotland.1,3,4 She died on 12 December 1965 at Fresno Co., California.5 She was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Fresno, Fresno Co., California.6
Jennie R. Baird was also known as Janet Robb Baird pr/Del Brodie
Jennie Baird was born on February 13, 1890 in Cumbernauld, Scotland. I have the Scotland statutory register of births lisiting her birth. I will give you a copy if you like.) Her parents were William Baird, an engineer, and Margaret Baird whose maiden name was Brodie. Jennie's name at birth was Janet Robb Baird. William Baird's maiden name was Janet Robb.
By the way, when William Baird married Maggie Brodie on November 28, 1889 in Glasgow Scotland, William Baird said he was a retired engineer. Perhaps, since he was retired, he said he was a farmer when he entered the United States in 1890 and moved to Fresno CA.
Jennie never married. From at least 1920 until she died on December 12, 1965 she lived in Fresno. She was a telephone operator. In the California Death Index, her name is Hennie Baird.
I finally went to the United States on Friday and mailed you a letter as well as picking up your letter with the article in the Tuolumne Quareterly. Thank you for the article. I will be returning to the states on Wednesday this week.
