o.k., I found the article. It came from the Yosemite National Park Research Library (921.2) and is entitled "Interview with Mrs. Thomas Rathbone Reid" September 26, 1951.
The author, Carl P. Russell, Superintendent, was en route from Sonora to Yosemite when he stopped to visit with Mrs. Reid on the porch of her old home in Groveland. The Reids had a homestead at Lake Vernon (where they spent the summer months fattening cattle). There was no road at the time (1870s), only a saddle trail from Hetch Hetchy Valley to the Miguel Meadows and Lake Vernon country. The Reid's cabin was on the shores of Lake Vernon. Jean and Louis Elwell occupied a homestead in the vicinity. The article refers to a photograph made of this interview but there isn't a photo with the museum's copy.
I see that Carol-Anne's Louis Elwell was born in 1860 and married Ella Bright in 1901. He's certainly old enough in 1901 (41) to have been married before. Ella (at 18) could easily have be a 2nd wife even though he's listed as single in the 1900 census.
