Sources agree that Margaret was born on 22 January 1839, but disagree on where in Ireland she was born. Some report at Londonderry, Ireland, others report Co. Cork.2,3,4 She married Mathew Coyle, son of Charles Coyle and Mrs. Ann Coyle, between 1859 and 1860 at Staten Island, New York City, Richmond Co., New York.2,5
Left a widow with four small children in January, 1867, Margaret apparently took a position as housekeeper to Robert Simmons who lived in Deer Flat. They were married on 7 May 1869 at California.1,6,7,8
Margaret died on 24 January 1929 at at home, Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California, at age 90 Her obituary reads:
Pioneer Woman Passes Away
Like the shock of ripened grain when it reaches maturity is gathered into the harvest storehouse, Mrs. Margaret Simmons, an honored pioneer of Tuolmne county, who had lived in the Groveland District for 70 years of continuous residence, passed away Thursday at the ripe age of 90 years and 2 days. Death was the culmination of 4 months of lingering illness.
The deceased was a native of Ireland, but came to this country when a young girl with her parents. She was married twice, her first husband's name being Coyle and her second Simmons. She had children by both marriages, and although left a widow many years ago, she raised to maturity 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters: Thos. F. Coyle of Fresno, Robert T. Simmons, the honored chairman of the Board of Supervisors from Groveland Mrs Elizabeth Shafer of San Francisco, and Mrs. Katherine A. James of Modesto.
"Grandma Simmons" as she was familiarly known by her neighbors and intimate friends, was noted for her kind disposition and her liberal hospitality. She often boarded the school teachers of the Groveland School, and always treated them with uniform courtesy. These amiable traits were intensified in all of her dealings with the members of her own family, and all of her children loved their mother. A big-hearted and beloved woman has passed away.
The funeral will be held this Saturday morning at 10 o'clock under the direction of Undertaker O"Beirne, wih high mass at the Big Oak Flat atholic Church, conducted by Rev. Father James Gilmartin, with the interment in the Catholic Cemetery.

She was buried on 26 January 1929 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California.12,13
Margaret (Lenan) Coyle Simmons was also known as Margaret Coyle.14,1 At least one source calles her Margaret Lenan. She is also referred to as Margaret Lennan, Margaret McLenan, and other variations of her surname.3 "Mgt. Coyle, age 12" is found on the passenger list for the Ship Calhoun, arriving in New York on on 3 January 1857. This matches the year of arrival Margaret herself reported in the 1900 census. If this is the correct person, she may have in fact given her age as 12 in order to travel as a minor child, the age shown could be a transcription error, or the age could have been reported incorrectly by the original compiler of the passenger list. Margaret (Lennan) Coyle Simmons is reported to have been a tiny woman who might well have passed for a young teen at nearly age 18; Ship Calhoun arrives.15 She may be the 21-year-old Irish-born Margt Coile (sic) who appeared with on the census of 1 June 1860 in the household of Charles Coyle and Mrs. Ann Coyle at Port Richmond, Middleton, Richmond Co., New York. She could not read or write, was employed as a laborer, and married within the census year. She appears to be the wife of 23-year-old Mathew Coile, also an Irish-born laborer who was married in the census year.5 By August 1863 Margaret and Mathew were living on Moccasin Creek in Tuolumne County, for their son Walter was born there on August 15. The family reports that Matthew left "on the last wagon train leaving New York for California", probably just before the outbreak of the American Civil War. The first shots were fired at Ft. Sumter in April 1861. By this time, Margaret was entering the second trimester of her second pregnancy. She chose to remain in New York, and would travel to California with her infant daughter by ship, possibly in the spring of 1862. Three other children -- Charles, Thomas and Kitty -- would all be born to the Coyles at Moccasin Creek.16,2 Margaret (Lenan) Coyle Simmons appeared on the census of 1870 at Big Oak Flat, Township 3, Tuolumne Co., California.17 She and Robert Benton Simmons appeared on the census of 1880 at Big Oak Flat, Township 4, Toulumne Co., California.18 Robert Thomas Simmons appeared on the census of 15 June 1900 at Tuolumne Co., California.19 Later that year she would move into Groveland, into what we now know as the Margaret Simmons House. The house first appeared on the Tuolumne County tax rolls in 1900, and was built for Margaret by her sons Walter and Thomas Coyle. Owner of the house is listed as Robert Simmons, so it is likely that he financed its construction. Margaret (Lenan) Coyle Simmons was a witness to motored to upper country with Francis Louis Cassaretto on 25 November 1916.20 Laura (Jones) Bolen Simmons and Robert Thomas Simmons appeared on the census of 1920 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California.21

According to the tombstone which once marked his grave at St. Anne's Church, Columbia, Tuolumne Co., California Mathew Coyle was born in circa 1837 at at County Westmeath, Ireland.3,4 He was the son of Charles Coyle and Mrs. Ann Coyle.1,2 Mathew Coyle married Margaret (Lenan) Coyle Simmons between 1859 and 1860 at Staten Island, New York City, Richmond Co., New York.5,2
Mathew Coyle died on 22 January 1867 at Moccasin Creek, Tuolumne Co., California. The family reports that he died of "miner's consumption", possibly tuberculosis. High levels of asbestos-bearing serpentine rock in the area where Mathew Coyle mined may have contributed to this kind of condition; Matthew Coyle of Moccasin Creek, formerly of Staton (sic) Island, died on Tuesday the 22nd.6,7,8 Mathew Coyle's tombstone at St. Anne's Cemetery, Columbia CA, signed by his brother Hugh Coyle, gives a death date of January 1865 and shows he was a "native of West Meuth Co., Ireland. Based on other documents dated 1865-1866 declaring Mathew Coyle's presence, it apears that the January, 1867 death date reported by several family members is correct.7
He may be the 23-year-old Irish-born male who appeared on the census of 1 June 1860 in the household of Charles Coyle and Mrs. Ann Coyle at Port Richmond, Middleton, Richmond Co., New York. Mathew had been married within the census year, could not read or write, and was employed as a laborer. His wife appears to be 21-year-old Margaret.2 By August 1863 Margaret and Mathew were living on Moccasin Creek in Tuolumne County, for their son Walter was born there on August 15. Three other children -- Charles, Thomas and Kitty -- would all be born to the Coyles at Moccasin Creek.9,5
Book I, Volume 8 of Tuolumne County's preemtion claims records Mathew's purchase of land.
Matthew (sic) Coyle Possessory Claim...being duly sworn deposes and says he has taken up for agricultural and grazing purposes and laid possessory claim to the following described piece of public land on Moccasin Creek in said county -- [detailed description of points consisting of pine trees and rocks] 880 yards x 880 yards on left side of creek adjacent to B. Murry's ranch, and consisting of less than 160 acres. The deponent says he holds no other claim, and said land is not claimed under any existing title. Sworn and subscribed before me, M. McGehee, Justice of the Peace 13 March 1865. (this claim was recorded in 10 April 1865).
Other entries made on the same date show that this parcel abutted John Hughes' claim on the northwest, and Bernard Murray's ranch on the south. Since it is known that the Hughes family ranch house was located near the present (2004) junction of Hwy 49 and Hwy 120 and above the present State of California Fish Hatchery, it is likely that the Coyle claim was located in the general area of the Moccasin Creek Fish Hatchery and the City of San Francisco's Moccasin Reservoir.10,11 Mathew Coyle was one of several grantors on the sale of a mining claim on the Tuolumne River near Stevens Bar to George F. Culbertson of Moccasin Creek. on 3 June 1865 at Tuolumne Co., California.12 He registered to vote on the same date.13
On 27 August 1866Mathew Coyle was naturalized at 5th District Court, Sonora, Tuolumne Co., California, 95370, in the 5th District Court; First papers could have been filed in San Francisco.14
Queries regarding the Coyle family are on file at Tuolumne County Genealogical Society: July 1983 - Beulah Koontz, 1841 Glen Haven Avenue, Walnut Creek CA 94595 (re. Nellie Coyle); and July 1991 - Helen Blewitt Argall, 507 Pine Crest, Crockett TX 75835 (Mathew).

Robert Benton Simmons was born circa 1815.2 He was born on 13 December 1820 at Virginia.3 He was born circa 1827 at Virginia; Calculated from age as reported in Great Register. Age conflicts with age as reported in Burden's Undertaking Index. If he was 46 at the time he first registered to vote in Tuolumne County, and if his age was correctly reported at death, he registered to vote in 1861.4
Left a widow with four small children in January, 1867, Margaret apparently took a position as housekeeper to Robert Simmons who lived in Deer Flat. They were married on 7 May 1869 at California.5,1,6,7 He died on 6 June 1892; Information from Florence Egger.8 He was buried on 7 June 1892 at Divide Cemetery NO PLOT NUMBER, Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California; Not in the Cemetery District burial record, but referenced by Burden with burial in Big Oak Flat. Since Burden did the burial, and since Simmons was not Roman Catholic, it is unlikely that he was buried at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Therefore, we assume he was buried at the Divide Cemetery.8

- [S13] Irene Paden and Margaret E. Schlichtmann, Big Oak Flat Road to Yosemite, The first known location of the Miwok rancheria was on the old Reid Ranch, somewhat north of Groveland, whose crumbling and vine-covered adobe now stands empty. Nearby is Garrote Creek where many mortars have been found. A century-old apple and cherry orchard still bears heavily and the Indian village was on a sunny hillside just south of it. About sixteen slightly flattened sites are all that mark the locations of the little houses made of cedar bark. The Miwoks scrupulously kept their hillside bare of brush, but now timber and other growth is fast encroaching. In 1857, when the Reid family built their house, the Miwoks had just transferred their belongings from this first site down to Big Creek. Later Edmund James preëmpted the land surrounding their new village but apparently the Indians didn’t mind having a neighbor and continued to occupy their hillside near the creek without disturbing him. Their village site (now deserted) is visible from the present county road, just within the fence and north of the gate to “Big Creek Ranch,” but in early days the road from Groveland turned east before getting that far and went past the ranch house, crossing Big Creek on an ungainly long wooden bridge still in existence, so that the Indian village was off the beaten track. About once a month the residents of nearby ranches could count on a sleepless night as the men of the tribe really settled down to a good powwow in their “round house” or gathering place which was on a bare knoll north of the village.
In 1898 the James Ranch was sold to S. A. Ferretti of Groveland and later to Dunn and McLellan. - [S2492] Union Democrat, see citation detail, unk, The following residents of Groveland and vicinity were in Sonora this week: Siol White, HM Stanley, Sylvester Carlon, Jos Valente, Louis Cassaretto, Frank L Goodnow, Ed. Walter Joseph Coyle was born on 15 August 1863 at Moccasin Creek, Tuolumne Co., California.3,4 He was the son of Mathew Coyle and Margaret (Lenan) Coyle Simmons.2 Walter Joseph Coyle was baptized on 15 September 1863 at Moccasin Creek, Tuolumne Co., California.5 He married Rosa May (Elwell) Coyle, daughter of Charles Henry Elwell and Rosa (Cory) Elwell, on 24 November 1887 at Colfax, Tuolumne Co., California, The marriage was witnessed by Eugene M. Elwell of Colfax and A. Lamb of Oakland CA. It was probably held at the hotel at
Colfax Springs operated by the Elwell family.1,6
Walter Joseph Coyle and Rosa May (Elwell) Coyle were divorced in 1917 at Sonora, Tuolumne Co., California. She complained that he was a lazy drunk who wouldn't support her or their minor children. He contested the divorce several times, but eventually gave in to Rosa's wishes.7,3
Walter Joseph Coyle died on 7 April 1927 at Sonora, Tuolumne Co., California, 95370, at age 63.3,8,9 A family tale says that Walter was buried in an unmarked grave alongside his half-sister Margaret Simmons Lane at Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Cemetery. [8/2000]. 2/2001 - Carol-Anne Tucker-Watt, Walter's great-granddaughter, reports that she has a photograph of his grave at the time of the funeral, and she believes it is at Mount Carmel Cemetery. She placed a headstone for Walter. The burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery, Big Oak Flat is confirmed in the O'Beirne records. NOTE: Walter is the SON of Margaret (Lennan) Coyle Simmons, not her husband!!!8
He appeared on the census of 1 June 1870 at Tuolumne Co., California. He appeared on the census of 1870 as W.[R?] Coyle, a 6-year-old male in the household of Margaret (Lenan) Coyle Simmons at Big Oak Flat, Township 3, Tuolumne Co., California.10 Walter Joseph Coyle appeared on the census of 1 June 1880 at Township 4, Tuolumne Co., California.11 He was Registered to vote on 7 August 1886 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California.12
Walter Joseph Coyle Registered to vote. on 18 June 1896 at Grovleand, Tuolumne Co., California.13 He appeared on the census of 1 June 1900. He was in 1904 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California.14 Helists his occupation as carpenter (an unknown value) in April 1910 at Third Township, Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California.15 He appeared on the census of 15 April 1910 at 3rd Township, Tuolumne Co., California; Walter Coyle and his family appear to be living in the Margaret Simmons house on Main Street in Groveland. Enumerated in the family are: Walter, head, who lists his occupation as postmaster; Rosa his wife (mother of seven living children); their children Ethel, Edmund, Ruth, Hazel, Violet and Mary; and Rosa Elmore, Walter's mother-in-law. Walter declares that he lives on a farm which is owned outright (no mortgage) and references farm schedule #24. Although there are no addresses given in this census, the Thomas Reid family lives nearby, and we know today that the Thomas Reid house is just down Main Street from the Margaret Simmons house. But consider also that Carlo DeFerrari told Carol-Anne Tucker-Watt that his family bought the Walter Coyle homestead in Groveland. The DeFerrari Ranch is between the old schoolhouse and the Margaret Simmons house. Was this where Walter was living?15
On 14 February 1916 Walter Joseph Coyle signed a deed of right-of-way to the City and County of San Francisco, Entry #45 Portion of the NE 1/4 of Section 25, T1South R16 East, MDB&M containing 3 acres. It is recorded in Tuolumne County Book of Deeds, 1916. at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California. He was awarded a half-interest in the property described as ne 1/4 sec 25 T1S R 16 E MDB in 1917 as a part of the divorce settlement.

Julia Scott was born on May 27, 1929, in Antioch, Calif., the daughter of Gladys And Merritt Mann of Colfax, Calif. Julia attended Colfax Elementary School and was a graduate of Placer Union High School, class of 1947. She attended Placer Junior College, graduating in 1949. Julia was a longtime San Juan Unified School District employee. She worked as an Executive Secretary in the middle school division at the district office. She was a valued and vital member of the staff. During her retirement years, she helped to form the Classified Retired Office Workers (CROWS) which continues to serve as a way for retired San Juan employees to stay connected with each other. Julia loved to be with her family. She was an amazing writer who shared her talents as archivist for the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and she also wrote plays for local theatrical productions. She loved to write poetry and spend time tracing her family's history. She loved the ocean and the beauty of the Umpqua River in Reedsport, Ore., watching the sunsets with her beloved husband. She treasured the love of her family and many wonderful friends. The world has lost a wonderful person with her passing, and she will be sorely missed. A longtime resident of Sacramento, Julia was 78 years old at the time of her death (December 29, 2007). She is survived by husband of 57 years, James Scott, daughters Jo Conger and Jennie Scott, Grandchildren Lee and Ben Conger, and her brother Theodore Mann. Family and friends honored Julia's memory at a private memorial service held on January 1, 2008.
