     Robert S Pilkinton was born in October 1865 at Giles County, Tennessee. He was the son of Jefferson Cahal Pilkinton and Mary (Renfro) Pilkinton. Robert S Pilkinton married Laura (Reeves) Pilkinton Polly Glasco, daughter of John D. Reeves and Mrs. Martha Reeves, on 16 July 1885 at Lawrence County, Tennessee.1 Robert S Pilkinton married Matilda (Hendrix) Pilkinton before 1910. Robert S Pilkinton died on 7 March 1930 at Barton, Colbert County, Alabama, at age 64.
     He appeared on the census of 9 August 1870 in the household of Jefferson Cahal Pilkinton at District 7, Maury County, Tennessee.2 Robert S Pilkinton appeared on the census of 15 June 1880 in the household of Mary (Renfro) Pilkinton at District 11, Maury County, Tennessee.3 Robert S Pilkinton appeared on the census of 1891 at Giles County, Tennessee.4 He appeared on the census of 6 June 1900 at Civil District 14, Lawrence County, Tennessee; There is a "Robert Pilkinton" listed as a single male having been born in Oct. 1865 (occupation day-laborer) living with a widow named Matilda Swader in the 1900 census of Lawrence County (1900 Lawrence County, Tennessee, C.D. 14, E.D. 55, page 98A). This age matches Robert and is at a time when he and his wife Laura may have just been separated. In the November 1900 Circuit Court session of Lawrence County both "Buck Pinkleton" and Tilda Swader are named as parties in a prosecution for "lewdness". There were no written details and I can only speculate that the case stemed from Robert living with Matilda while still married to Laura. The Sheriff was unable to find the parties in Lawrence County,Tennessee and indeed they show up in the Colbert County, Alabama census (1910 Colbert County, Alabama, precinct 3, Barton, page 79A), while Laura and the children show up in Giles County, Tennessee. Matilda Swader's daughter Martha married Robert Pilkinton's brother John and also later moved to Colbert County, Alabama and "R.S. Pilkinton" made his mark on John Pilkinton and Martha Swader's marriage bond.5 He appeared on the census of 5 May 1910 at Barton, Colbert County, Alabama; Also included: Step-son, Joseph Swader;

     Jefferson Cahal Pilkinton was born on 17 July 1838 at Maury County, Tennessee. He was the son of James Smith Pilkinton and Cynthia Davidson Renfro. Jefferson Cahal Pilkinton married Mary (Renfro) Pilkinton, daughter of Jesse Renfro and Sina (Roper) Renfro, on 14 July 1859 at Lawrence County, Tennessee.1 Jefferson Cahal Pilkinton died on 20 June 1893 at District 14, Giles County, Tennessee, at age 54.
     He appeared on the census of 2 June 1860 at District 11, Lawrence County, Tennessee.2 He ended military service on 15 June 1865 at Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee; 48th Infantry (Nixon's) CSA 1862-1865 Wounded In 1864 TENNESSEE CONFEDERATE PENSION APPLICATIONS : NAME: Pengleton, Jefferson K. WIDOW: Pengleton, Mary Ann PENSION #: W3352 COUNTY: Lawrence (See Mary 's Widows application in Mary Renfro's section) Enlisted fall 1861 according to wife's Widow's Pension Application( CSA records state Nov.1,1862, but this is may be due to lost records for Co. H or most likely the absorption of an earlier group of enlistees into the newly re-formed 48th) . Fought in 48th Tennessee Infantry ( Nixon's Regt). Wounded in right forearm at battle of Nashville and either captured there on 16 Dec 1864 or at his home in Giles County where he went to recuperate and was picked up by the Union Army (the unit he was in passed through the area where he lived during their retreat following the Battle of Nashville). Took oath of allegiance to the Union and was released from internment on or about 15 Jan 1865. His brother John R. is on the same oath list ( John claimed to have never deserted on his application and provided witnesses). The same holds true for his brother-in-law John Woodard who was also in the 48th. A great many members of local units appear to have been picked up and labeled deserter's by the Union Army as it swept through the area (following General Hood's debacle at Nashville in late December 1864).The Army of the Tennessee of which the 48th was a part, marched through north Giles County on their retreat to North Alabama in December 1864 - literally within a couple of miles of these wounded, cold and hungry men's homes. The Federals arrested many men as they lay at home recuperating from wounds or sickness. The men may never have been actually sent to Nashille, instead at this late stage in the war possibly given the option by Federal officers to sign the oath on the spot and put their X mark on the list. On the other hand - Several thousand Confederates were also captured during the Battle of Nashville and may have been interred in Nashville at that point until signing the Oath. Since Jefferson died before pensions were instituted, we will never know his version. His widow Mary filed a pension in 1911 which gives a good idea of what happened. The oaths in this application have the witnesses recalling that Jefferson came home the winter (around Christmas) of 1864 severely wounded in the right forearm (missing bone and unable to work for a year) having been wounded at Franklin or Nashville (most likely Nashville). His brother John Pinkleton who was in a different unit, the 53rd, is found on the very same capture list as Jefferson. John was definitely not captured at Nashville as made evident in the witness statements in his pension application. One can only speculate as to how these men ended up with their x-marks on this oath list. The 48th Fought under Gen. s Hardee and Cleburne much of the war, participating in Perryvlle, Chickamauga, and Johnstons Atlanta campaign (Ringgold Gap, Kennesaw Mtn. and Ezra Church "Lickskillet Rd") as well as Nashville. Some of the above is my speculation based upon my study of the battles, records, and pension papers of the 48th and 53rd Tennessee.
