Groveland resident Joseph Frederick “Joe” Cornell died Aug. 9 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 80.
Mr. Cornell was born in Denver and his family moved to California when he was 3 years old.
He joined the U.S. Air Force at age 14 and was stationed in Okinawa the day before his 15th birthday.
After serving in the military for four years, he worked as a fireman in Contra Costa County until 1979.
Mr. Cornell then worked as a truck driver in San Jose and Groveland for several years.
He enjoyed water skiing, gambling, motorcycles and restoring old cars.
He and his wife moved to Pine Mountain Lake 23 years ago.
Mr. Cornell was preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Bessie Cornell; his siblings Clela, Arabelle, Nori, Clara, Bob, Rex and Jerry; and his father-in-law, Murray Van Patten.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Priscilla Cornell, of Groveland; his children and their spouses, Jeanie Cornell, of San Jose, Nancy and Phil Vaca, of San Jose, Julie Cornell and Doug Tausheck, of Walnut Creek, and Joe and Diane Cornell, of Lafayette; his brother, Bill Cornell, of Cameron Park; his mother-in-law, Betty Van Patten, of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; his-sister-in-law, Pam Van Patten, of Liverpool, N.Y.; and former wife, Marge Cornell, of San Pablo; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service with a fireman’s final tribute and military honor guard will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito.
A celebration of life will be held on 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Groveland Evangelical Free Church.

Kathryn Aston “Kay” Carter, of Groveland, died Dec. 13 at Sonora Regional Medical Center transitional care unit. She was 91.
She was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Evanston, Ill., the daughter of David and Gladys Aston, who died in 1948. She was married to her husband of 68 years, Arlis Carter, during World War II.
She was a talented needlework artist, and made many knitted, crocheted, needlepoint and sewn pieces for family and friends over the years, including her fellow employees at the Yosemite National Park Post Office, where she was a postal clerk for about 15 years; members of her bridge club, golf partners and many friends in Lindsay, Tulare County, where she and her husband raised their three sons.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arlis M. Carter, in 2010.
She is survived by her sons and their spouses, David and Marcialyn Carter, of Arroyo Grande, Bob and Karen Carter, of Groveland, and Brad Carter, of San Francisco; grandchildren, Chris Carter of Simi Valley, Nathan Carter and wife, Cindy, of Santa Clara, Tricia White and husband Tavis, of Arroyo Grande, Josh Carter, of Ridgecrest, Lon Carter and wife Katrina, of Carbondale, Colo., Neil Carter, of Denver, Colo, and Lanie Cabot and husband Darren, of Templeton; and six great-grandchildren.
At Mrs. Carter’s request, no services are planned. Donations may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento.
