     John Paul Degnan was born on 10 October 1888 at California; Note that his World War I draft registration shows him born 1888, but his WWI draft registration shows him born 1889.2,3 He was the son of John Degnan and Mrs. Bridget Degnan.1 John Paul Degnan married Mae Frances (Barrett) Degnan circa 1916; date estimated. Doc Degnan was widowed in December, 1922, shortly after the birth of his youngest daughter. We speculate that he married Lena during the holday season of Dec 1929. She was a nurse, possibly in his Groveland hospital. She reported at the 1930 census that she was then 27 years old and 27 years old at her first marriage. Therefore, she had already celebrated her 27th birthday at her marriage, but not yet celebrated her 28th birthday on 7 April 1930 when the census taker came to call.4
     John Paul Degnan was also known as Doc Degnan. He appeared on the census of 1900 as an 11 year old son in the household of John Degnan and Mrs. Bridget Degnan at Twp 5, Mariposa Co., California.3 John Paul Degnan appeared on the census of 1910 as a 21 year old unmarried son in the household of John Degnan and Mrs. Bridget Degnan at Yosemite National Park, Mariposa Co., Caliafornia.2 John Paul Degnan lived in 1920 at Nogales, Santa Cruz Co., Arizona; In the 1920 census John Paul Degnan, born California Arizona-Mexico border at Nogales. His family was not with him.5 He was Physician on the Hetch Hetchy Project between 1921 and 1934 in at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California.6 He witnessed the death of his wife Mae Frances (Barrett) Degnan on 8 December 1922 at Tuolumne Co., California.7 John Paul Degnan and Lena Degnan appeared on the census of 1930 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California.8 On June 5, 1936 John Paul and Lena Degnan sailed from San Francisco to Honolulu aboard the SS Lurline, arriving June 11. He was 46, she 36. John Paul Degnan appeared on the census of 1940 at Livermore, Alameda Co., California.9 He was registered for the draft in 1942 at Alameda Co., California.10

     She witnessed the death of Mae Frances (Barrett) Degnan on 8 December 1922 at Tuolumne Co., California.4 M Frances Degnan appeared on the census of 1930 as an 11 year old daughter in the household of John Paul Degnan and Lena Degnan at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California.1 M Frances Degnan appeared on the census of 1940 as 20 year old daughter Francis in the household of John Paul Degnan at Livermore, Alameda Co., California. She is shows as AB (absent from household?).5 M Frances Degnan was graduated circa 1942 with a Masters degree in social work. Her graduation date is estimated. In the 1940 census her father reported that she had completed 2 years of college. She would have then finished her BA in 1941, and her MA in 1942. Her obituary tells us she earned her MA at Catholic University, Washington, DC; Catholic University. About circa 1946, M Frances Degnan entered the cloistered contemplative Catholic order of Discalced Carmelite nuns, where she took the name Sister Mercedes OCD. She Discalced Carmelite - a Catholic mendicant order that either goes barefoot or wears only sandals, now known as OCD. Other branches of the Carmelite order are O Cam (the oldest branch, Carmelites of the Ancent Observance) and the secular branch (once called the Third Order) designatied OCDS.

     Sister Mercedes of the Immaculate Heart, who lived 59 of her 86 years as a Discalced Carmelite, died June 19 in the community's monastery in Kensington. She transferred there in 1950 from the Carmelite Monastery in Santa Clara where she had entered religious life after earning a master's degree in social work from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and working in San Francisco as a social worker in the early 1940s.

    "Realizing through her work the immensity of suffering in the peoples of the world and her own very limited abilities to relieve it, she chose the cloistered Carmelite life of sacrificial prayer, reparative penance and hidden suffering in order to give herself wholly to God for the world," said Sister Mary of the Kensington community.

    Sister Mercedes was a "jack of all trades," learning much from the workmen whom she supervised when they came to the monastery. "Whenever anything needed 'fixing' she was the one called. Whenever unexpected work had to be done, she was the first to volunteer," Sister Mary said. She served as community cook for many years and used her artistic talent to repair and repaint small statues.

    The eldest daughter of John Paul Degnan and Mae Frances Barrett, she lost her mother to childbirth when she was three. Her Degnan forebearers pioneered in Yosemite and she spent much of her childhood in Yosemite Valley.

    As a Carmelite, she was particularly devoted to the Blessed Sacrament and consecrated her life to the Blessed Virgin Mary to whom she directed all who sought her prayers.
    Her funeral Mass was celebrated June 22.

     Lena Degnan was born circa 1903 at California; Note that her age as reported at death (39 years in May 1939) suggests that she was born c 1900.1 Doc Degnan was widowed in December, 1922, shortly after the birth of his youngest daughter. We speculate that he married Lena during the holday season of Dec 1929. She was a nurse, possibly in his Groveland hospital. She reported at the 1930 census that she was then 27 years old and 27 years old at her first marriage. Therefore, she had already celebrated her 27th birthday at her marriage, but not yet celebrated her 28th birthday on 7 April 1930 when the census taker came to call.1 She died on 13 May 1939 at San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California.2
     She and John Paul Degnan appeared on the census of 1930 at Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California.3 On June 5, 1936 John Paul and Lena Degnan sailed from San Francisco to Honolulu aboard the SS Lurline, arriving June 11. He was 46, she 36.
