George W. Coulter started a tent store here, early in 1850, to supply hundreds of miners working the rich placers of Maxwell, Boneyard, and Black creeks. The settlement was called Banerita, from the flag flying over Coulter's store. A post office established in 1853 was called Maxwell Creek, but changed the following year to honor Coulter. The first stamp mill for crushing quartz ore was built by Andrew Goss. Quartz mines, nearby, under crude methods, with wood for fuel, operated for years producing millions. Coulter built the first hotel and water for it was pumped from a well by two Newfoundland dogs. Francisco Bruschi erected the first permanent buildings and his family became leading merchants for over eighty years.7 He was in 1904 at Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California.8 He; Mariposa Gazette.4

on 5 August 1905. He Says Company Can't Collect Toll:
Whether to pay toll or not was the question that agitated J. M. McSwain, freighter of Groveland, and thus far it looks like a case of pay. On or about the 20th of last June McSwain passed over the road of the Big Oak Flat and Yosemite Turnpike Company with two teams -- one of four and the other six horses -- but refused to pay the regular toll demanded by the gatekeeper. For the offense he was arrested early in July, and Tuesday of this week the case came up before Justice of the Peace Paynter of Groveland. McSwain was promptly convicted and fined $5. An appeal will be taken to the Superior Court. He was defended by Attorney John E. Budd of Stockton who contended that the company had forfeited the right to collect toll from anybody. District Attorney Holland and Senator J. B. Curtin conducted the prosecution and as a ground for such insisted the company had forfeited no right it ever held. Superficially the case seems trivial, but actually it is one of importance and will be watched with intense interest by many.

Nona appeared on the Groveland scene after Sal had worked for a few years as a San Francisco police officer. When he returned to "the hill", Sal brought Nona, an Irish girl, with him.
One of the first questions which comes to mind is "Where is Sal, and why isn' he buried next to Nona?" The answer given by all is that he is buried in the "Divide" Cemetery. Such is not he case! Even though some can remember the memorial service held for Sal in the Odd Fellows Hall in Big Oak Flat, he is not found in the Odd Fellows section of the "Divide" Cemetery.
Clara Franco Fulton remembered that there was soe degree of unhappiness expressed by her parents at the time of he Sal Ferretti funeral, but she couldn't quite remember what the concernw as. The answer probaby is that, acording to couny death records, Sal was cremated and his ashes were buried in Stockton at Casa Bonita Cemetery. Cremation, in those days, was expressly forbidden by the Catholic Church. This was at the request of his niece and heir who lived is Stockton. Somehow, it is doubtful that Nona would have agreed! - [S75] Burial Permits, Tuo Co., 1-12, By deduction, if Nona's father was Patrick Turley, then her maiden name must be Nona Turley.

In the 1970's and 1980's when the Justice Court still functioned in the basement of the Groveland Community Hall, the Groveland Library occupied the back of the basement. Although she was technically a Library Technician, to her Groveland patrons Jeanne Linn was The Librarian and local link to the County Library in Sonora. She was also vitally interested in Pine Mountain Lake, an activist in holding the assciation management and board to the constraints of its Codes, Covenants and Restrictions.3
