Longtime Big Oak Flat resident Melburn "Nubie" Alton Penrose died Tuesday at a Modesto care center. He was 83. He was born in Jacksonville and lived in Big Oak Flat for 28 years. He graduated from Sonora High School and was active in school activities and sports, including football. He worked as a plumber for 35 years and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
His family said he loved fishing, hunting and watching the Oakland Raiders.
Mr. Penrose is survived by his son, Mel Penrose of Big Oak Flat; daughters and companion, Judy Lewellen and Gary Wemmer, both of Big Oak Flat, and Jill Penrose of Jamestown; a sister, Bernice Albers of Modesto; grandchildren Greg Lewellen of Groveland, Darlene Baxter of Danville, Darin Baker of Jamestown, Derek Baker of Vacaville, and Mel and Eric Penrose of the Bay Area; great-grandchildren Carson Baxter of Danville, Alexa Plaster of Soulsbyville and Trayton Baker of Sonora; and longtime friend Edna Allen of Big Oak Flat.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Penrose, in 1976.
