BIOGRAPHY
http://www.swingmark.org/biography.htm

Allan Edgar Kramer was born April 29, 1903 in Winigan, Missouri. His parents, Alice (Melrose Crees) and John Andrew Kramer, a harness maker, named him after the poet Edgar Allan Poe. Allan learned his father's trade, but showed an interest in art from an early age. Harness making was a profession which disappeared rapidly after the introduction of the automobile, so Allan, along with most of his five brothers turned their leather working skills to shoe repair.

In the late 1920's Allan's own family made the trip from California to Chicago so that he could attend the Chicago Art Institute. Allan was greatly influenced by the work of painter John Singer Sargent, whom he sought to emulate in his early painting. In time, he developed his own style, though it remained essentially representational. Although he did many still lifes and landscapes, his central interest was always portraiture.

During the Great Depression, Mr. Kramer accepted a franchise to operate a shoe repair store in Yosemite National Park.

Then in the 1940's Allan moved his family to the Bay Area. Arthur Millier, a Los Angeles art critic, wrote of Mr. Kramer's work at that time: "Kramer's work augurs a successful career for the artist." He was, however, unable to make a living out of his artistry and continued to sustain himself and his family over the years by repairing shoes. "He was a 19th century realist during a period of great artistic experimentation," wrote his son, Lloyd Kramer.

Despite that fact, Allan Edgar Kramer's paintings now hang in many homes in America and Europe. He had exhibited mainly in California art galleries, the highlight being a showing at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco. Mr. Kramer's portrait of former Governor Edmund G. Brown of California held a place of honor in the governor's mansion in Sacramento during Brown's tenure there.
Allan married Marion Marie Chantry in 1920. Marion, who suffered from limited vision, was an amazing woman in her own right and a great inspiration to Allan. Shortly after Allan died, Marion had a cataract removal procedure and placement of an artificial lens in one of her eyes. She was able to see better with this lens than she had seen since she was a young woman. It was an incredible revelation for her to see Allan's work with her dramatically improved vision. She really had no idea how wonderful his paintings were! All those years she had supported him, praised him and encouraged him based largely on her faith in him. She regretted terribly that it was too late to share with him her great pleasure at seeing his paintings for what was really the first time.

Allan and Marion had two children: a son, Lloyd and a daughter they named after a character in a poem of Allan Edgar's namesake... Lenore.

Allan Kramer died in 1986 several months after suffering a stroke at the age of 84. He and Marion Marie Chantry appeared on the census of 1930 at Riverside, Riverside Co., California; 1930 census of Riverside, CA

Brevet Captain George Henry Pettis, U.S.V.

Brevet Captain George Henry Pettis was born at Pawtucket, Rhode Island, March 17, 1834; his family removed to the village of Cohoes, New York, in 1837. He attended the public schools in that village until he was twelve years of age, when he entered the office of the Cataract, the first newspaper published in that village; in 1849 removed to Providence, Rhode Island, where he followed the occupation of printer until 1854, when he went to California, arriving at San Francisco on June 17 of that year, on the steamer " Brother Jonathan," via Nicaragua; he was engaged at mining in the vicinity of Garrote, Tuolumne County, from June, 1854, until May, 1858, when he arrived at San Francisco en route to Frazer River. The Frazer River bubble having collapsed, he resumed his occupation as a printer, and was employed on the Alta California and Morning Call, and held a situation on the Herald when President Lincoln made a call upon California for troops. He entered the military service of the United States August 16, 1861, as second lieutenant Company B, First California Infantry, Colonel James H. Carleton; promoted to first lieutenant Company K, same regiment, January 1, 1862, commanding the company nearly all of the time, until mustered out on February 15, 1865, when he was immediately mustered into the service again as first lieutenant Company F, First New Mexico Infantry, Colonel Francisco Paula Abreù. He commanded Company F until promoted to adjutant of the regiment June 1, 1865, and was finally mustered out, his " services being no longer required," September 1, 1866, at Santa Fe, New Mexico, by Captain Asa B. Cary, Thirteenth United States Infantry, A. C. M., having served continuously five years and fifteen days. Was in a number of skirmishes with Apache and Navajo Indians; brevetted captain United States volunteers March 13, 1865, " for distinguished gallantry in the engagement at the Adobe Walls, Texas, with the Comanche and Kiowa Indians," November 25, 1864, in which he commanded a section of mountain howitzers mounted on prairie carriages. This expedition was under the command of Colonel Kit Carson, First New Mexico Cavalry. This engagement took place on the north bank of the Canadian River, in the " pan-handle" of Texas, near the boundary-line of the Indian Territory, and lasted from break of day until night. The forces of Carson consisted of about one hundred and fifty California and New Mexican cavalry, with the two gun-detachments of twenty-six men, while the enemy numbered over five thousand of the best Comanche and Kiowa warriors. Colonel Carson reiterated until the day of his death that "if it hadn't bin for them `spiritual case' of Pettis's not a man of the expedition would have escaped from the valley of the Canadian River on that day." Upon being mustered out of service he located with his family at Los Algodones, county of San Ana, forty-five miles south of Santa Fe, where he established the " Railroad House, No. 4.44 Broadway," and performed the duties of U. S. Forage Agent, and a post-office being established at this village, he was appointed postmaster in 1867.

In 1868 he removed from New Mexico to Providence, Rhode Island; was a member of the Common Council from the Ninth Ward from June, 1872, to January, 1876, and a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 1876 and 1877; was boarding-officer of the port of Providence from 1878 to 1885; was marine editor of the Providence journal from 1885 to 1887; is now sealer of weights and measures and superintendent of street signs and numbers at Providence, Rhode Island.

Became a member of the Grand Army of the Republic by joining Kit Carson Post, No. 1, Department of New Mexico, in 1868, and joined Slocum Post, No. 10, Department of Rhode Island, by transfer, in 1872, of which post he held the offices of adjutant and chaplain; was a charter member of Arnold Post, No. 4, Department of Rhode Island, in 1877, of which post he has held the positions of officer of the day and senior vice-commander; was chief mustering-officer, Department of Rhode Island, in 1877 and 1879, and assistant mustering officer in 1890; was a member of the National Council of Administration, and a delegate to the Twentieth National Encampment, held at San Francisco in 1886.

Became a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Commandery of California, November 10, 1886. Insignia No. 5065.

He is secretary of the California Veteran Volunteer Association, and secretary of the United States Veteran Association, of Providence, Rhode Island; a member of the Society of California Volunteers of San Francisco, California, and various other societies.

     James A Kraenzel GRANDMOTHER???
Hello,
I understand that Ruth Kraenzel was involved in the founding of your historical society (http://www.pinemtnlake.com/our-mountain-town/groveland-news/), so I'm hoping you can pass this information on to her, her husband, or any of their family.
Today I came across an interesting post on Reddit, in which someone found a century-old class registration slip from the University of Minnesota (https://www.reddit.com/r/FoundPaper/comments/6ej5ia/purchased_old_poetry_book_at_flea_market_and/). It looks like the slip was signed by a John W. Powell, and indeed John W. Powell was a longtime English professor at the university (http://collections.mnhs.org/MNHistoryMagazine/articles/35/v35i02p077-086.pdf).
In researching John W. Powell, I was surprised to find that a childhood reminiscence of his kept by the Minnesota Historical Society was processed for the MHS by my own great aunt, Kathryn Johnson (http://www2.mnhs.org/library/findaids/p2313.xml). I was inspired by this serendipitous connection of sorts to research a bit further and see if I could find any living relatives of John W. Powell. A little googling indicates that he's Jim Kraenzel's grandfather, via Margaret Powell Kraenzel (http://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv79446/pdf), and that Jim Kraenzel is Ruth Kraenzel's husband.
I hope I've correctly connected the dots and that the picture is of interest to the Kraenzels.
Thank you,
Eric Johnson

Hotel Charlotte Has New Owners- 2003

Upthagrove said one of her favorite dishes is the chicken Florentine, which comes topped with spinach and mozzarella in a lemon white wine sauce. Hotel Charlotte’s previous owner, Ruth Kraenzel, suggested the couple put artichoke chicken on the menu because it was a popular dish when the Café Charlotte was open a few years ago. The decided to call it chicken Jerusalem and serve it with artichokes, mushrooms, shallots and fresh herbs with white wine and a touch of cream.

“And she’s right – it’s a very popular dish,” Upthagrove said.
---
Also in keeping with tradition, Upthagrove brought along her wire-haired terrier, Bob, who’s pretty content to lounge underneath the furniture in the front room. Kraenzel’s hotel dogs were two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Lady and Duke. She had run the hotel since 1984, when she and her husband Jim bought it. Jim Kraenzel said, his wife will miss running the Hotel Charlotte. “She enjoyed it very much,” he said. “She had a good time with it – she got to meet a lot of people and kind of entertain people…she was not in any rush to sell it, but she also decided it was time.”

Charlotte DeFerrari became a legend in her own time and it is rumored that she still roams the halls of her hotel.

We (the husband/wife team of Victor Niebylski & Lynn Upthagrove) are working on re-building the history between the time that Charlotte no longer owned the hotel and today (2006). Working backwards we can say the Hotel was recently purchased by the husband/wife team of Victor Niebylski & Lynn Upthagrove from Ruth & Jim Kraenzel who cared for the hotel for 19 years. Prior to the Kraenzel's the property was owned by Jennifer Norris & her husband for 7 years.

Expanding on in the tradition begun by Ruth Kraenzel for the long hallway [of the hotel], Lynn has invited local photographers to hang their favorite pictures.

In 1918, Charlotte DeFerrari built the Hotel Charlotte on the site of an old livery stable, and in 1921, she purchased the Gem Saloon, next door, annexing it to the Hotel Charlotte as a restaurant.

Mesg #66693 "South Fork Tuolumne River claim on Ebay"

The claim is located a little east of Hardin Flat, named for "little Johnny Hardin". The history books say he was a very small man who rode a very large horse. He'd have to lead it over to a stump or a large rock so he could mount it. Anyway, Hardin built and ran a sawmill there, not a mine. The lumber was sold to the mines further west. This was in the '50s & '60s. The quartz mines weren't discovered until years later.

The Big Oak Flat Road (1955) by Irene D. Paden and Margaret E. Schlichtmann
Chapter IX
ABOVE THE SETTLEMENTS

Near James Hardin’s fence line at the crest of the second (or Hardin’s) Hill commenced the trail to Hetch Hetchy blazed by Joseph Screech.5

The top of the grade is barely reached before one goes down again—this time along heavily-timbered winding, steep Hardin’s Hill. At the bottom lies Hardin’s Flat.

The small eccentric Englishman, James Hardin, who owned the fence and the land just here, called himself “Little Johnny ’Ardin” and lived alone. Most of the road from the “Lower Bridge” to his ranch was personally wrested from the timber by Johnny himself with the aid of two tremendous oxen. It has been logged lately and a sawmill stands today in Hardin’s Flat—the legitimate successor to a sawmill run single handed by Johnny and his capable brutes.

It was at Hardin’s in the late ’50s that the Golden Rock Water Company built the dam which supplied water for the great flume and ditch. It is best seen in September when the water is low. South Fork, released from its timbered prison, comes lazying through the sunny flat but deep-cut banks and whole trees piled like packstraws in its rocky bed attest the power of flood season.

Since Carlo DeFerrari tells us in his 2013 history of the DeFerrari family that Rose was first married in 1913 and later divorced, we conclude that she was 26 when she married Waters. Since he was enumerated in the 1920 census as a 34-year-old widower lodging in Oakland, Calfiornia, this strengthens the likelihood of a 1920 marriage.1,4 Rose (DeFerrari) Rucker Waters died on 2 April 1975 at Oakdale, Stanislaus Co., California, at age 81.5
