Our beloved Billy Joe Eaton of Antioch peacefully passed away on Sept. 25 at age 83. Born July 16, 1931 in Wynnewood, OK, he served in the Army during the Korean War. He retired in the Boilermaker's Union as a welding foreman. He was married to the love of his life, Betty Joe, for 62 wonderful years.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; 3 sisters; son, Billy Joe Jr; and grandson, Aaron. He is survived by his wife; daughters, Iva Campbell (husband Dave), and Theresa Dixon (husband Mike); sons, Andrew Hicks and Steven Heneby; 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; 4 sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
Bill will be deeply missed and remembered for his generous heart.
Graveside service will be at the Oak View Cemetery in Antioch on Friday, Oct. 3, at 11:00am.

    Mariposa County resident Walter "Walt" R. Scott, who worked for many years in Tuolumne county, died Sunday at his home in Jerseydale, Mariposa County. He was 83.
    Mr. Scott was born in Jerseydale. During World War II, he joined the Army Air corps and served as a technical sergeant in the 465th Bomb Group in campaigns in France, the Balkans, rome and other parts of Europe. He received many commendations. Among them were the Air Medal, distinguished Flying Cross, a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star. He spent most of his life logging with his father, brother and son. From 1968 to 1975, he was a contractor for the Pickering Lumber Company in Standard. He also did a lot of logging around Camp Curry.
    He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Virginia "Ginny" Scott of Jerseydale; daughters and sons-in-laws, susie and Walt Lewis of Morgan Hill, Santa clara County, Karen and Paul Simmons of Jerseydale and Julie and Dean Fouch of Mount Bullion, Mariposa County; his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Christene Scott of Bootjack, Mariposa county; five grandsons; five granddaughters; and 11 great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Andrew Cathey; his parents, Ray and Mary Scott; and his brother, Frank Scott.

    Mrs. Johnson was born in Escanaba, Mich., and moved to the Bay Area in 1957. She moved to La Grange in 1993. She was very involved at St. Louis Mission Church in La Grange, where she taught catechism, was an extraordinary minister and a member of the rosary club. She worked at Don Pedro Elementary School and was a member of the Red Hat Society. Mrs. Johnson loved spending time with her family and was a frequent spectator at sporting events at Sonora High School and Sonora Elementary School, and was the mascot at the 2006 Relay for Life in Stanislaus County.
    She is survived by her husband of 28 years, David Johnson of La Grange; her daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Fred Bartgis of Jamestown; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Margo McCarty of Benicia, Solano county; grandchildren, Jillian and Eric Bartgis and Sean McCarty; her brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Trudy Johnston of Florida; her brother-in-law, Donald Jacobs of Escanaba, Mich.; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roy and Dee Johnson of Livermore; and many nieces and nephews.

    Mrs. Harrington was born in Ogden, Utah. She attended Bonneville High School and graduated in 1966 and attend her 40th class reunion in 2006. she was married in 1975 in Boulder, Colo., and raised her family there. She was a seamstress and artisan, created original clothing for fashion boutiques in Aspen and Vail, Colo., and owned her own ceramics store in Boulder. She volunteered at the children's schools and was a Brownie leader. Mrs. Harrington and her husband and son Peter later lived in North Ogden, Utah, where she was a telecommuter for over five years, before moving back to California. She spent 13 years with Digital Equipment Corporation and became the Operations Manager for the Systems Research Center in Palo Alto. she retired to Groveland five years ago.
    She is survived by her husband, Sean Harrington of Groveland; her mother, Cecile Kenneday of Ogden; her daughter and son-in-law, Jodie and Mark Strecker of Redwood City, San Mateo County; sons Jeffrey Sanders and Peter Harrington of San Jose; her sister, colleen Walford of Layton, Utah; and three grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Dwain Kenneday; her biological father, James Brock; her mother and father-in-law, Joseph and Helen Harrington; and her brother-in-law, Peter Harrington.

He returned to Fort Belvior, VA, and was commissioned a first lieutenant before resuming service in the Philippines. After his discharge, Jim was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He retired as a captain in 1955. Following Jim's service years he worked and moved about the west coast for Fiberglass Engineering. Wanting a slower pace Jim purchased Tamalpais Hardware in Mill Valley. Later Jim moved to Santa Cruz where he was employed by Corrick Int'l and traveled the world. His most unusual accomplishment was selling sand from California to Saudi Arabia. Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Marie Petersen Kerrigan; four children: James A. Kerrigan of S/V Grace, Elizabeth Manthey of Chelan, WA, Pete Kerrigan of Groveland, CA, and Jeanne Zamanillo of Kentfield, CA; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.     John Fleming, formerly a logger in the employ of the West Side Lumber Co. died at Buck Meadows, (Hamilton Station) on Friday of last week.
    The man had been ill for sometime with stomach troubles. He was a native Michigan and aged 27 years. An effort was made to communicate with his mother and sister in the East, but no response was received to the wire.
    George Bartlett, an old friend of Fleming, had the body shipped to Tuolumne, where the funeral was held at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon.

    Long-time Coulterville resident John Giusto, died at Sonora Regional Medical Center on December 29 at the age of 97. He was born in Altaville, CA and had been a cattle rancher in Mariposa and Tuolumne counties for 60 years. He also enjoyed mining.

     Etta Bella Baker was born on 17 July 1911 at Oklahoma.2 She married Harry Sprague Baker, son of Florence (Sprague) Baker, circa 1932.3 Etta Bella Baker died on 24 March 2008 at Greeley Hill, Tuolumne, California, at age 96.2
     During World War II she worked at a US Army base in Santa Ana CA as a licensed Vocational Nurse. Later, she used these skills as a volunteer with the Greeley Hill Ambulance through the Norithside Ambulance Association.4

    During World War II she was a licensed vocational nurse at the army base in Santa Ana, Cal. She rode horses, the last time when she was 88 years old.
    She was an avid bridge player and was still crocheting at 96 and loved reading and watching TV, especially old westerns.
    she was preceded in death by her mother and father, seven brothers and one sister, of which she was the youngest. Also by granddaughters Lynda and Theresa.
    She is survived by daughters Shirley Ann Beggs of Simi Valley and Sharon Lee Tucker and husband bill of Greeley Hill; granddaughters Dana Cothran and Vicky (Sam) Kelser; seven great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
    The family is asking, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to their favorite charity.

    Alice Elizabeth Miller of Mariposa died March 18. She was 79. She was born Alice Elizabeth Durgin on April 9, 1928 to Elmer Slater and Amy Taylor Durgin.     She was a graduate of the Los Angeles City School District and a member of the originating classes on the college campus of Los Angeles City College Campus of Los Angeles State College where she became president of Alpha Theta Pi Sorority. Mrs. Miller was a music major and received her bachelor's degree and teaching credential from Los Angeles State College. She taught in the Palos Verdes estates and Antelope Valley School districts, and later as a substitute teacher in the Lowell School district of Whittier. Mrs. Miller was a 62-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a John C. Fremont Hospital volunteer for 26 years, and a member of the Mariposa United Methodist Church for 25 years.
    She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Leland T. Miller of Mariposa; daughter, Victoria of Mariposa; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Dawn of Orange, Keith and Roberta of Rancho Cucamonga; four grandchildren, Travis and Shaun of Orange, Richard and Amanda of Rancho Cucamonga; cousins, Frank and Marianne Durgin of Maine, Harry and Mary Kline of virginia, Barbara Folley of La Mirada, Margaret Folley of Virginia, Jack Reynolds of West Virginia, Don and Elanor Dawson of Escondido, William and Betty Caress of San Clemente; and adopted son and his family, Brian Aitchison of England.
    Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 28, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist church of Mariposa. Graveside services will follow at Mariposa Cemetery Masons section in Mariposa. Arrangements are under the direction of Mariposa Funeral Home.
