Pauline (Hammill) Ulloa Kassabaum was born on 20 January 1861 at Don Pedro Bar, Tuolumne Co., California. She was the child of an Irish father and a German mother.2 She was the daughter of Thomas Hammill and Mrs. Hannah Hammill.

Luis (sic) Ulloa and Pauline Hammill were married (probably at her parents' home) at Don Pedro Ba, Tuolumne Co., Californoiar on 20 Oct 1878.3 Pauline (Hammill) Ulloa married Charles Kassabaum circa 1885 at California; guesstimated based on Pauline's statement in the 1900 census that she had been married 9 years. If Charles died in Apr 1894, then he and Pauline were married c 1885. Pauline (Hammill) Ulloa Kassabaum died on 6 January 1914 at Oakdale, Stanislaus Co., California, at age 52. Her obituary states that the funeral was held in Stockton, suggestion that she was also buried there. No gravesite has been located.4,5
Pauline (Hammill) Ulloa Kassabaum was also known as Pauline (Hammill) Kassabaum. As of 20 January 1861, Pauline (Hammill) Ulloa Kassabaum was also known as Pauline Hammill. As of 1870, Pauline (Hammill) Ulloa Kassabaum was also known as Pauline G Hammel per 1870 census, big oak flat. She appeared on the census of 1870 as P.G. Hammel, 9-year-old daughter in the household of Thomas Hammill and Ann Hammel at Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California.6 Her married name was Pauline (Hammill) Ulloa Look for spelling Olloa.7 Pauline (Hammill) Ulloa Kassabaum and Louis Ulloa appeared on the census of 1880 at Branch Township, Stanislaus Co, California. The family is enumerated with the surname Ulroe.8 In 1990 Clara Fulton told Dr. Alan Repashy in an oral interview that Martha Ulloa, Louie's mother, lived with Tim Carlon. Louie didn't like Carlon, and left the household at age 14. In fact, Louie's mother Pauline (Hammill) Ulloa Kassabaum went to work as housekeeper for Tim Carlon after the death of her second husband in April, 1894. Louie may have struck out on his own about that time, or he may have clashed with his German-born stepfather and indeed left home at 14 -- before Kassabaum's death. Whatever the case, Martha Ulloa was NOT the mother of this Louie Ulloa.9 Pauline (Hammill) Ulloa Kassabaum appeared on the census of 1900 at Twp 2, District 35, Mariposa Co., California.10 She was a member of Native Daughters of the Golden West. Her membership documents are found in Vol 28, pg 211 or the organization's records; Pauline Kassabaum, submission found in Vol 28, pg 211.

Died KASSABAUM- At Coulterville, on Sunday, April 22, 1894, Charles KASSABAUM, aged 64 years.
Mr. KASSABAUM was a native of Prussia, but came to the county in early life. He had lived in Mariposa county many years, and won success and fortune in his pursuits, as well as the respect of the people in the community in which he lived.
  4. [S13] Irene Paden and Margaret E. Schlichtmann, Big Oak Flat Road to Yosemite, Chapter 9, Above the Settlements ...Along the highway, one-half mile from its junction with Hell’s Hollow Road, is a fine meadow. At first it was known as Sprague’s Ranch and appears as such in Scenes of Wonder and Curiosity in California, by J. M. Hutchings, 1871. John B. Smith then homesteaded the flat and became George E. Sprague’s partner. Smith’s large two-storied frame house stood exactly where the the modern house is today, separated from the road by a picket fence. The open meadow is bordered with cone-shaped pines and cedars. The dominating feature is still a large and ancient barn which held the relays of stage horses, for Smith’s was a change station and boarded the hostlers. When the Big Oak Flat Road Company was organized, construction started at this point and the first toll gate was temporarily located here.

Curving past the barn a crossroad leads south six miles to historic Dudley Station on the Coulterville Road where lives Mr. W. D. McLean, grandson of Hosea E. and Fanny Dudley, the founders of the station.

Smith’s Flat, at about 3000 feet elevation, is gay in springtime but is too low for summer wild flowers. Across the hills to the north lies what was Charles Kassabaum’s Meadow. Both are favored spots for deer. At dawn and dusk they may be seen grazing where formerly hay was harvested for the stage horses....

  6. [S13] Irene Paden and Margaret E. Schlichtmann, Big Oak Flat Road to Yosemite, In Appendix 1, the authors talk about stage lines into Yosemite. They write: In 1872 Hodgdon formed a partnership with Simon Shoup and an arrangement was made whereby Shoup’s stage met Hodgdon’s at Hardin’s Mill three times a week. Hodgdon then took the passengers on to Gentry’s where they were met by the saddle train, keeping them firmly at his new hotel all night en route. The Shoup-Hodgdon project was known as the Yo Semite Stage Line and the saddle train was owned and operated by J. M. Hutchings of Yosemite Valley. Hodgdon built a large barn on a tributary of North Crane Creek close to his stage station. James (“Johnny”) Hardin finally acquired an interest in the line and continued to run a small stopping place on his flat.... Shoup and Hodgdon were still partners in ’78. The Sonora “Union Democrat” for April 13th of that year wrote, “Mr. Shoup and Jerry Hodgdon are below fixing preliminaries for their line of stages which we understand are in readiness now to connect with Olive and Co.’s line from Stockton.” On November 9, 1878, the Sonora “Union Democrat” stated that Hodgdon had been awarded the government mail contract to Yosemite, deliveries to be made three times a week six months out of the year and once a week during the winter and spring. Interviews established that he made his winter trips on snowshoes.

In 1879 Hodgdon sold out to Charles Kassabaum and John D. Meyer of Groveland but kept an interest in the business. He and his son Thomas remained as drivers for a short period. After almost two years Kassabaum and Meyer dissolved their partnership. Mr. Meyer then gave full time to his cattle raising and Mr. Kassabaum afterward became a director in a later stage line. ... On March 1, 1886, the Great Sierra Stage Company was incorporated, having purchased the “Yosemite Run” of the Nevada Stage Company. Its directors were William C. Priest, of Big Oak Flat, Colwell Owens Drew and Charles Kassabaum of Groveland, Henry R. Crocker and Thomas H. Beals whose property lay in the Santa Maria voting precinct above the settlements. John Shine of Sonora became the company’s superintendent and manager. The Great Sierra Stage Line ran stages from Milton to Yosemite Valley via Copperopolis, O’Byrne’s Ferry and Chinese Camp. By this time the road was completed to the Valley floor, and tourists were no longer required to change to horse or mule back for the final descent. The stages were no longer of the mud wagon type and more attention was given to the comforts of the traveler.
