Thomas Huntington Burns was born circa 1827 at Vermont. He was the son of Francis Burns and Lydia (Huntington) Burns.1 CAUTION: While this marriage date is within the reasonable range for a marriage between Eliza MS Unknown and Thomas Huntington Burns, and while only 200 miles separate Carroll Co. IN from Lenawee Co., MI, there is no confirmation that Elizabeth Scott and Thomas H Burns of this record are the same couple who in August 1850 were living in MI with a newborn daughter.2 Thomas Huntington Burns died on 26 May 1893 at El Paso, Texas.
Thomas Huntington Burns was also known as Thomas H Burns.3 He is presumed to be the male age 10-14 who appeared on the census of 1840 in the household of Francis Burns at Rollin, Lewanee Co., Michigan.4 In the 1850 Census, Thomas and Eliza Burns are living in Rollin Township, Lanawee Co. Michigan with their infant daughter Roena (see census pg 261-a.) Thomas Huntington Burns and Mrs. Eliza Burns appeared on the census of 1850 at Rollin, Lewanee Co., Michigan. They are living in the same community as Francis and Lydia Burns, who in 1840 had a son who was between 10 and 14 years of age. In 1850, Thomas is 23. Thomas consistantly reports his father's birthplace as Ireland and his mother's a Maine. This matches the reported birthplaces of Francis and Lydia. Added to residency and other information known about Thomas, Francis and Lydia, preponderance of evidence supports the claim that Thomas Huntington Burns is the son of Francis Burns and Lydia Huntington Burns.5 Thomas H Burns hosted the marriage of Matthew Foot and Mary Jane Burns on 13 September 1857 at First Garrote, Tuolumne Co., California; A Will Smith witnessed the marriage of Mathew and Mary Jane Foot, but it was not the Wm Lea Smith who married Nellie, daughter of Hugh Coyle of Columbia.6,7,8 Thomas Huntington Burns and Mrs. Eliza Burns appeared on the census of 1860 at Sutter Creek, Township 4, Amador Co., California. He lists his occupation as engineer.3
Thomas Huntington Burns and Mrs. Eliza Burns appeared on the census of 1870 at Chinese Camp, Township 2, Tuolumne Co., California. He was still mining, and declares of real and personal property valued at $3000 and $300.
The Burns and Turzich Mine was located in the Chinese Camp Area of Tuolumne Co., California. In 1948 the mine was described as a past producer, with major chromium deposits in Serpentine rock.
