Giuseppi Ferretti was born in April 1836 at Italy.2,3 He was the son of Mr. (?) Ferretti.2,3 Giuseppi Ferretti married Maria (Soleri) Ferretti circa 1865; guesstimated.4,5,3,6,2 Giuseppi Ferretti was buried in 1916 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California.7 He died on 31 May 1916 at age 80.8,9,10,11
Giuseppi Ferretti also went by the name of Happy Joe Ferretti. Giuseppi Ferretti was also known as Joseph Ferretti. He Brief Bio:
The road up Moccasin Creek is an easy trek in the very footsteps of the ’49ers. It is almost level and shaded in the afternoon by a low bluff from whose top black-trunked digger pines lean out precariously. Two miles from the bridge is another landmark which has been looked at with interest, and usually misinterpreted, for decades. It was the hospitable home of Guiseppi or Joseph Ferretti. His daughter, Maria Ferretti Sandner wrote: “In 1869 father, whom every one knew as ‘Happy Joe’ Ferretti, bought squatters rights from Mr. Cassassa and took over his small store or trading post eventually adding a winery and vineyards. At that time 1500 people of all nationalities lived and mined along the creek. Fourteen years before at the peak of the gold diggings about 2000 were in the canyon. You know, of course, that after awhile the government made a regulation that the early squatters’ rights must be homesteaded to be legal, so father and many others got government patents, or homesteads. Father got his in 1884 and, about the same time, decided to build a little roadside shrine such as he had seen in his native Italy. He intended to put a figure of St. Joseph in it but somehow never got to it. Many present day travelers think it is a drinking fountain.”
The Ferretti house, built by Charles L. Harper of Big Oak Flat, with its accompanying winery and vineyards, have vanished; just some foundations are left, and walls breaking up into piles of loose rock. A few straggling apple and pear trees remain with the seemingly indestructible figs. But across Highway 49, landscaped with dry weeds and the silver filagree of wild oats, the shrine stands high. It was meant to be seen and heeded. “Happy Joe” did whathe could. Rocks were plenty and so the body of the shrine took form. Very likely it was difficult to get the statue of his patron Saint Joseph and, from one year to the next, it was delayed. His dream never was completed but it was a better dream than most.
Mr. Ferretti was a powerful, stocky man who wore earrings, loved his accordion and told stories inimitably. He gained his nickname from a trivial incident and bore it the rest of his life.
Mrs. Sandner’s letter continued: “One day a very aloof woman traveler with her husband stopped at our place for refreshment, as father made and served delicious wine. These travelers were on their way by stage to Chinese Camp. Father, who was always jolly and very informal apparently didn’t impress the woman favorably, for, when she arrived at the Garrett House she asked Mr. Solinsky who ‘that character’ up the road might be. Mr. Solinsky, who was a good friend, laughed heartily and said, ‘Oh, that’s Ferretti— Happy Joe Ferretti.’ Some other friends overhead this and from that day he was always called ‘Happy Joe’.”
Mr. Ferretti was known as the leader of the Italians in the vicinity and it is said that his preference ruled on election day. There were Italians along the canyon of Moccasin Creek, just as they were to be found scattered all through the Southern Mines. Good solid family men who had come to live as well as to mine; who brought their skills and their wives from the mother country; planted their orchards and vineyards; made their wines and raised their families to be a stalwart bulwark of society and a force for good in their counties and in the state.

S. A. Ferretti had the strongest pull and the longest pole, hence he secured the persimmon, and is now Supervisor from the 4th District, by the grace of the appointing power of Governor Gillett. Mr. Ferretti is to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Sylverter Carlon.
The new Supervisor is a son of Joseph Ferretti, of Moccasin Creek, but has long been established in the butcher business at Groveland. He has many friends throughout that section, and when it was known that a new Supervisor had to be named by the Governor they became active in his behalf. He is a Republican with strong independent tendencies, and it is reasonable to expect that he will give more attention to the duties of his office than to politics.

He was a powerful, stodky man who wore ear rings, and he was politically important to his fellow Italians in the area. IN 1869 he took over a small store along Moccasin Creek. In 1884 he built a little roadside shrine such as is found in Italy. He intended to place a statue of St. Joseph in it, but for some reason he never got around to doing it. The ruins of the shrine can still be seen next to the road on the old State Hwy 120 between Moccasin and the beginning of Lake Don Pedro.

- [S480] Dr. Allen Repashy, Historical Survey OLMC Cemetery, ...One of the first questions which comes to mind is "Where is Sal, and why isn't he buried next to Nona?" The answer given by all is that he is buried in the "Divide" Cemetery. Such is not he case! Even though some can remember the memorial service held for Sal in the Odd Fellows Hall in Big Oak Flat, he is not found in the Odd Fellows section of the "Divide" Cemetery.
Clara Franco Fulton remembered that there was soe degree of unhappiness expressed by her parents at the time of he Sal Ferretti funeral, but she couldn't quite remember what the concernw as. The answer probaby is that, acording to couny death records, Sal was cremated and his ashes were buried in Stockton at Casa Bonita Cemetery. Cremation, in those days, was expressly forbidden by the Catholic Church. This was at the request of his niece and heir who lived is Stockton. Somehow, it is doubtful that Nona would have agreed! - [S2169] 1 June 1880 Records of the Bureau of the Census, Washington, D.C., National Archives and Records Administration.

He M. Foot & Groveland Hotel Story
Excerpts from the National Register of Htstodc Peaces
Groveland Hotel
!n 1866 George Reed, in conveying title to Matthew Foot, had recorded that the Groveiand Hotel property included "...two adjoining lots fenced in, containing seven acres more or less and on which is situated a large adobe house and a separate shed, and fruit trees. Said premises are at the location and trading post of Joshua D. Crippert & Co. in 1850 and the location was purchased from them and occupied by the said George Reed in 1851 and continuously until this date... and is situated east and adjoining with the street between the lots on which are located the Stone house and barn of James Tannahill..." (Tannahill's "Stone house" still stands today.) Joshua Crippen's possessor/ claim is unrecorded. Tuolumne County's Tax Roll archives begin with 1852 but curiously, George Reed doesn't appear until the 1853 listing (Crippen's name isn't listed either). Based on the language of the Reed to Foot transaction, the Groveiand Hotel (adobe building) was probably built for Crippen in 1850. Some sources credit Reed with the erection of this building, however Reed was a successful sawmill operator and probably would have opted for an all wood structure rather than build something made nearly entirely of stone and adobe. Reed's use of the building is unknown other than being listed in the Tax Rolls as a "dwelling house." Furthermore, a wood frame building erected circa 1852 (known as the Washington Hotel) has traditionally been cited as Groveland's first hotel. The oldest existing photograph of the Groveiand Hotel's adobe building dates from the 1880s. The photograph appears to show a structure that had undergone little, if any, change since its original construction
in 1850. This photograph, coupled with the way the building looks today, evidences a striking similarity between the adobe building and the Larkin House located in Monterey. Although no information has been uncovered to substantiate that the Groveiand Hotel's adobe building architecture was inspired by the Monterey Colonial style a case can be made that Joshua Crippen was so influenced when he established his trading post in old Garrote. Such a connection, if validated, would make Crippen's trading post a rare (maybe only) example of a Monterey Colonial building to be found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains today.
Matthew Foot is the first owner of the subject property known to have operated a hostelry business at this location. Matthew Foot came to Garrote during the Gold Rush as a prospector. With his acquisition of the Reed property, the adobe building became known as the "Garrote Hotel." The business followed suit with the town, being renamed the Groveiand Hotel in 1875. In 1877, Groveiand was surveyed, the official townsite
covering some 234 acres, Matthew Foot's parcel was Lot 5 of Block 4 encompassing about seven acres upon the north end of which stood the Groveiand Hotel. In 1882 H. O. Lang wrote, in his history of Tuoiumne County, that Matthew Foot had been engaged in the "hotel-keeping" business for quite sometime, said enterprise "...being carried on in a way highly acceptable to the traveling public." Lang's comments suggests
that tourism (to Yosemite Park) had become an important component of the Groveiand Hotel's business trade. He PEDIGREE CHART DATED 1871

I wanted to thank you for this post. Matthew and Mary Jane
were married in my g-g-grandfathers home. We believe she was his sister. We are trying to conclusively tie Thomas H. Burns to her parents, Francis and Lydia Huntington Burns. Mary Jane's neice, (Thomas's daughter) Inez Irene Burns, married James Marshall Kinne. Dolora (Dolera ?)Foot married their son Frank Kinne. We would love to swap info with anyone else researching this elusive bunch.
