Stowell, after enduring a week's illness, is recuperating rapidly. on 17 March 1900 at Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California.³

In addition to her obituary, there is a biography from the History of San Joaqouin County by George H Tinkham, 1923, pg 447-8. As of 1870, Celeste A Stowell was also known as Selesta Ann Stowell.³ She and William A Stowell appeared on the census of 1870 at Markleeville, Alpine Co., California.³ Celeste A Stowell and William A Stowell appeared on the census of 1880 at Paicines, San Benito Co., California.⁴ Celeste A Stowell appeared on the census of 1900 as the 50-year-old married mother in the household of her son George D Stowell at Township 3, Tuolumne Co., California, Note that the record shows Celeste is the mother of 8 children, 7 children living. Various census records, however, show a total of 9 children.⁵

     George D Stowell was born in June 1867 at California; 1870 Census shows George D as a 3 year old child with a 7 month old sister. Since this is the record closest to his birth (as compared to the 1900 census) we conclude that the 1867 birth date is the more accurate.² He was the son of William A Stowell and Celeste A Stowell.¹ George D Stowell married Adelia Van Geen, daughter of Richard Van Geen, in October 1900 at Priest Hotel, Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California.³

Julia was not employed outside the home.⁴ Margaret (Corcoran) Anker remembers Julia coming on horseback to Priest’s Station from Deer Flat to do the laundry.^{11 Cobden, Loc. cit} She always wore a sort of cowboy hat with a green band which said, “It’s hell to be poor.” Julia later moved to Priest’s to do the laundry full time.^{22 Ibid}
