John F. Callahan, who was the pioneer in the revival of the mining industry on the south side of the Tuolumne, died of typhoid fever, in Boston, on Thursday evening. In response to a telegram his son, George A. and his brother Sylvester Carlon, left Groveland last Saturday, and reached his bedside before the end came.

The deceased was instrumental in having heavy investments made in mining enterprises in this county...............he was principal owner of the Mississippi and Rhode island mines at Big Oak Flat and Groveland......he was the proprietor of a wholesale liquor establishment in Boston and was a partner with a cousin of Senator J. B. Curtin in a profitable real estate business. He leaves a large estate to be divided betwen two sons and a daughter.

The deceased was the eldest son of Mrs. Carlon, of Groveland, and mother and son had been separated for many years and mourned each other as dead, until ten years ago. Upon their arrival in Boston from Ireland many years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Carlon, left the deceased, then a mere babe, with a married sister of Mrs Carlon named Callahan. The Carlons then left for California to build a home, a few years later their attempts to locate their boy failed in every instance, nor could any trace of the sister be found. Several years ago at the Midwinter Fair, in San Francisco, Mrs. Carlon met some people from Boston. During the conversation that followed Mrs. Carlon spoke about her lost son, detailing all the circumstances. These people had known her sister, Mrs. Callahan and knew the whereabouts of her long lost son, then a man. Greetings by telegraph passed between mother and son, and a few weeks later tears, tenderness and love marked the meeting of the long separated parent and child. Shortly after the Carlons left for California, Mrs. Callahan, with the boy left in her charge, went to New Hampshire. Many weary months elapsed before the Carlons finally reached California. Letter after letter sent to the sister at her last known address remained unanswered, and letters sent by the sister to California failed to reach the Carlons. A few years after moving to New Hampshire, Mrs. Callahan died, and to this event is due the fact that long years intervened before mother and son were reunited.
