Former Longtime Groveland resident Lester James Peters died June 3 at a hospital in Reno, Nev.
Mr. Peters was born in Mountain Fork, Ark., to James Armon Peters and Beulah Ann Smith-Peters. He left home at an early age and was a cowboy for his uncle, Grady Smith.
While working for his uncle he met his future wife, Eunice House. They were married June 22, 1935. Mr. Peters was active in the logging and sawmill industry in Arkansas and sustained life threatening injuries while in logging.
In 1945 the family moved to Glendale, Los Angeles County, where Mr. Peters worked in a bakery. Mr. Peters and his family moved to Big Oak Flat in 1947 and he was a rancher, mechanic and tow truck driver.
They owned the Big Oak Flat Garage, gas station and contract station for AAA and the National Automobile Club for 40 years before retiring and moving to Stagecoach, Nev., in 1996 to be near their son and daughter, James Peters and Barbara (Peters) Pargament.
Mr. Peters was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Eunice House Peters, in 2008; and brothers Clarence and Benny Peters.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara (Peters) Pargament, of Fallon, Nev.; sons Billy Gene Peters, of Groveland, and James E. Peters, of Stagecoach; sisters Lorea Sanders, of Bieber, Lassen County, and Annie Mae McBride, of Mena, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Internment was held June 9 at the Rocky Cemetery in Mena, Ark. Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena handled arrangements.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of Christ in Groveland.

Formerly of Redwood City Passed away April 30th, 2008. She was born in Glendale, CA to John and Corinne Cooney on July 9th of 1925. She is the oldest of four sisters, Margaret (Peggy) and Sharon, who preceded her in death and Colleen Caruso of Pacifica, CA. She has left behind Charles Hixenbaugh, her loving husband of 47 years and two daughters, Shanley Hixenbaugh and Denise Nasso. Jane was a graduate of UC Berkeley. She owned and operated Graphic Production for 20 years. She was an active member of the Catholic Church. In retirement her many hobbies included bridge, water color painting and Red Hatters. She touched many lives for the better and will be dearly missed by all. Services and burial will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Groveland, CA on Monday, May 12th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations me made to a charity of your choice and that you call an old friend and tell them you love them.

Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Nelson of Groveland; children Sandi Ganus and Diana Case, both of Arkansas; Michael Smith of Groveland; Becky Moore of Lakewood; grandchildren Matthew and Patrick Smith of Groveland, Michael J Smith and wife Karissas Ronan of Cottage Grove OR, and Lindsay Smith of Sonora; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Ray Smith.
