Groveland resident George "Gene" "Lone Eagle" Eugene Nelson died March 28 at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. He was 80. Born in San Jose, he moved as a child to Groveland where he was raised.
He joined the US Navy in ithe 1940's and after being discharged moved to Southern California. He returned to Groveland in 1973 and started his own masonry and tile setting business. He enjoyed gold panning and mining and had published two poetry books.
He was part Chickasaw Indian and once served as Grand Marshall in the Groveland Parade.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Nelson of Groveland; children Sandi Ganus and Diana Case, both of Arkansas; Michael Smith of Groveland; Becky Moore of Lakewood; grandchildren Matthew and Patrick Smith of Groveland, Michael J Smith and wife Karissa Ronan of Cottage Grove OR, and Lindsay Smith of Sonora; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Ray Smith.
A service will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to the Groveland Museum and Library. San Jose Funeral Service is handling arrangements.
