Ernie Beck, who came to Groveland in 1914, aboard a four-horse stage, and stayed here for 74 years, died recently at the age of 100 in Saratoga. With his brother he purchased 40 acres and erected a log cabin which was destroyed by fire in 1974. In 1920 he built his own home. For 30 years before his retirement he was employed by San Francisco's Hetch Hetchy project.
He was a 50-year member of the Yosemite Lodge of Odd Fellows and a member of the Big Oak flat Rebekah Lodge. In 1978 he was named mayor of Groveland's Old West Days. In subsequent years he had been honored at STCHS POPS and meetings.
A memorial fund in his honor has been set up with our organization.
