Yosemite: the Park and its Resources (1987) by Linda W. Greene
Dr. J. L. Cogswell stated in 1910 that he and eight others discovered the grove on 10 May 1858. Their party had left Garrote, near Big Oak Flat, for a sightseeing trip to Yosemite Valley. While encamped at Crane Flat, one of the party shot a deer, but the wounded animal ran away. The next day the party set out on the trail of the deer and came by accident upon a group of magnificent trees. So overawed were they that they forgot the deer and spent the day exploring the area.
They particularly noted a giant tree with its interior hollowed out by fire. They named it King Solomon's Temple, although it later came to be called the Dead Giant. Cogswell immediately reported his discovery to the San Francisco, Daily Evening Bulletin, and the grove quickly became a regular stop for tourists on their way to the valley.
William McCarthy, Dave Lumsden, and James J. Lumsden carved out the Dead Giant Tree in 1878, creating a tunnel through which stages passed for many years. According to Hutchings, this was the first giant sequoia tree cut through. W. G. Marshall, who visited the Big Tree groves and Yosemite Valley in June of that year, related:
We came to the Tuolumne Big Tree Grove, [and came upon] . . . a tunnel through the stump of one of the largest sequoias in the grove, through which the road passes, and the stagecoach is driven. . . . The tunnel measures 12 feet, and it is 10 1/2 feet wide at the top. . . . The tunnel had only been completed a week before our visit to the grove, the first coachful having passed through the stump on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 18.

Autobiography & Reminiscence of Dr. James L. Cogswell, San Francisco, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Dr. James Lafayette Cogswell was born in Willington, Connecticut, on November 29th, 1830. On the 5th of March 1849, Dr. J.L. Cogswell sailed in the Bark "Floyd" from Providence, R.I. to San Francisco. They made one eight-day stop in Coquimbo, Chile and arrived in San Francisco Sept. 15th, 1849 after a trip of 193 days. Dr. Cogswell remained in San Francisco for three weeks and then went to Jacksonville, Tuolumne County, where he mined and practiced dentistry until 1857. Then he went to Garrote (now called Groveland) and built the Washington Hotel with Mr. Otis Perrin. Dr. Cogswell and Mr. Perrin ran the hotel until 1859 when Dr. Cogswell left for San Francisco and there practiced Dentistry for thirty-five years. Dr. J.L. Cogswell was married in 1867, to Mrs. A. Bernard of Stanford, Connecticut. They had two daughters, Emily May and Florence Edith, and one boy, Theron Eustice Cogswell, who died when he was six months old. On July 4th, 1899, Dr. J.L. Cogswell was elected President of the "Dental Society of Sitka" in Alaska and was also made an emeritus member of the Dental Association at that place.

James Lafayette Cogswell was born in the State of Connecticut, November 23, 1830. He died in Alameda County, California, April 13, 1921, at the age of ninety years. Dr. Cogswell, who was of sturdy Revolutionary stock, came to California among the pioneers, coming to this State in 1849. He was a resident for many years of San Francisco. In October, 1875, he issued and had published a call to local eligibles, with a view to forming a Society of Sons of Revolutionary Sires. As an outcome of this, there met at Dr. Cogswell’s office in San Francisco, on October 22, 1875, eight men, who organized a temporary society of this nature and arranged to participate in the exercises and march in the parade in San Francisco on July 4, 1876, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence. Dr. Cogswell was elected the first president of this society here. The idea was soon taken up in several Eastern States and other societies formed, the result of which was the organization in 1889 of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution through delegates from a number of States who met in New York City. The meeting called by Dr. Cogswell in San Francisco has therefore, the honor of being the beginning of the organization which ultimately became the Sons of the American Revolution.

Dr. James L. Cogswell was a dentist by profession, in San Francisco, CA. He was Master of Crockett Lodge, No. 139, Free and Accepted Masons, and a Honorary Member of the Masonic Veteran Association. Dr. Cogswell died at the Masonic Home in Union City, California, in 1921.
