     John and Elizabeth Tomberlin left Arkansas for the California gold fields some time between the 1850 census and their youngest daughter's birth in California in 1853. They left their youngest child, James, in the custody of John's sister and brother-in-law, Mary (Tomberlin) and Carroll Cameron. Cameron was named the boy's guardian. After Cameron's death in Sep 1858, James became the ward of anotherTomberlin aunt and uncle, Rebecca (Tomberlin) and Henry Baker.2 He appeared on the census of 1870 at Franklin Co., Arkansas; listed as James Wilson, a 19-year-old farm laborer living in the home of his aunt and uncle, Rebecca (Tomberlin) and Henry Baker. That on August 1856 there was issued to Carroll C. Cameron a Bounty Land Warrant #348 for his services as a corporal in Capt. Prevetts and Fry's Co of Alabama Militia in the Florida War. Warrant was for 40 acres and had not been received before Carroll's death. He believes wards would benefit if Warrant was sold. Henry Baker appointed guardian of minors. Makes a bond for $200.00 on 6 Jan 1857.

    Former Tuolumne County resident Jerome "Jerry" Vanover died May 11 at his home in Bellingham, Wash. He was 65.

    Mr. Vanover was born in Sidney, Neb., and was raised in Nebraska, West Virginia, Oregon and California. He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a bachelor of science degree. He attended Presbyterian seminary at Knox College in Toronto, Canada, where he received his bachelor of divinity. For six years, he was a Presbyterian minister in Southern California.

    He later returned to school and received a degree in law from Loyola Marymount University. Mr. Vanover was a practicing attorney for 28 years. He worked in private practice in Southern California for about five years. He then worked for the District Attorney's office in Lake County for six months before moving to Sonora, where he worked in private practice and as a public defender. While in Tuolumne County, Mr. Vanover lived in Sonora, Sugar Pine and Jamestown. He moved to Bellingham in July 2007 to be closer to his family.

    Mr. Vanover was preceded in death by his father, James; first wife, Jeanette; and second wife, Rose.

    He is survived by his mother, Irma Vanover, of Bellingham; sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy and Clive Mark of West Vancouver, British Columbia, Ladonna and Marty Stroup of Aldergrove, British Columbia; and his nieces and their families, Erin and Byron Hildebrand of Langley, British Columbia, and Jolie and Ged Wright of Langley, and their sons, Evan, Nathan and Justin.

    A celebration of his life was held May 17 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bellingham. At a later date, his ashes will be buried at Columbia Cemetery.

    She was born in Denver. She and her husband, Irwin, enjoyed more than 40 years of playing golf together, tennis, swing dancing, square dancing and bridge. They served in many golf associations through the years. Her family said she and her husband pass on a love of the ocean, desert and mountains -- places they both lived.
