    Margaret H.S. Jeffers, of Groveland, died Aug. 29 at a Sonora hospital. She was 82. Mrs. Jeffers was born in Ireland, where she obtained her medical degree at Trinity College in Dublin. She came to the United States in 1958.
    She earned her New York state license and practiced under her maiden name, Margaret H. S. Clements.
    She later passed her boards in pathology. She worked in New York Hospital and was on faculty at Cornell University Medical College. Mrs. Jeffers also earned her master's degree in library science from Columbia University in New York City. She was a published poet. She was also a medical author and was published by McGraw Hill.
    Her family said she was very quiet and unassuming, but very thoughtful and considerate of others.
    She is survived by her husband, J. Dereck Jeffers; son, Richard G. Jeffers; and three brothers, one in Ireland, one in Canada and one in Australia.

    Longtime Pine Mountain Lake resident Marie (Chambless) Harris died Sept. 6 at her home. She was 85.
    Mrs. Harris was born in Oklahoma 1924 and moved to Selma, Fresno County, when she was 6 months old.
    She graduated from Selma High School in 1941, and in 1946, married her husband, Don Harris, in Fresno. Since then she lived in Visalia, Santa Maria and Modesto. She moved to Pine Mountain Lake in Groveland in 1982.
    According to her family, Mrs. Harris was a good cook and excelled in many forms of needlework, including crocheted lace, quilts, linens and intricate cross-stitch.
    Mrs. Harris loved to travel and through the years visited many countries including: New Zealand, Bali, Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Austria and Spain. She also went hot air ballooning in Italy, Switzerland and Turkey.
    Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her parents, John and Gertrude Chambless; and her sisters, Irene Glick and Gladys Patterson.
    Mrs. Harris is survived by her husband, Don Harris, of Pine Mountain Lake; her sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Wilbur Lincoln; her children and their spouses Claudia and Don Davis and Dave and Lynn Harris; grandchildren Rebecca and Kimberly Davis, Lisa Foss and her husband, Dan Foss, Anna Harris and Laura Dillon and her husband, Andrew Dillon; her great-granddaughter, Vivian Foss; and numerous friends and extended family.
    In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice of the Sierra, P.O. Box 4805, Sonora, CA 95370, or at a favorite charity.

    Mildred Woolard, formerly of the Don Pedro area, died Sept 5 at a Sonora care center. She was 91.
    Mrs. Woolard lived in Turlock since 1971, when the home she had lived in since 1946 was inundated by the creation of Don Pedro Reservoir.
    She was a native of Missouri.
    Her family said she was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidering and cooking.
    She led a Bible study group while living in the Don Pedro area and was a member of Fellowship Bible Chapel in Turlock.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, James Woolard, in 1989; a great-grandson, Justin Graham, in 1993; and three sons-in-law, Bill Graham, in 1972, Dick Algeo, in 1995 and Paul Delnero, in 2002.
    Mrs. Woolard is survived by four daughters, Barbara Algeo, of Sonora, Mary Valponi and her husband, Bob, of Sonora, Bonnie Delner, of Sonora, and Joyce Crimmins and her husband, Bill, of Jamestown; eight grandchildren, Dave Valponi, of Chico, Mike Valponi, of Sonora, Linda Disney, of Florida, Jim Algeo, of Bridgeport, Brenda Marine, of Sonora, Frank Graham, of Morro Bay, Mary Graham, of Turlock, and Brian Crimmins, of Orlando, Fla.; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
    Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Fellowship Bible Chapel, 501 E. Canal Drive, Turlock, CA 95380. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

    Clarence Vernon "Bill" Penland, former longtime resident of the Greeley Hill-Coulterville area, died Sept. 16 in Oklahoma. He was 71. He was born in Visalia to C.E. Penland and Mary Lou (Clark) Penland. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1958. He attended Machinist Mate School at Great Lakes Naval Station and served aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard CVA-31 and the USS Norton Sound AVM-1. He moved from Mariposa County to Oklahoma 14 years ago with his wife, Debra. His hobbies included building muzzle loading pistols and rifles, hunting, fishing, vegetable gardening, cooking, crafts and storytelling.
    He is survived by his wife, Debra Fleck; his sons, Mike Penland and wife, Katie, of Tahlequah, Okla., and Mark Penland and wife, Darcy, of Groveland; a grandson, Adam Penland, of Iowa; and a sister, Lauana Haynes, a nephew, Tim Peterson, both of Visalia.
    The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Oklahoma Crippled Children's Fund.
    Graveside services were at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Gabby Hayes, Eddie Cook Tom Lewis, Bill Steely, Jim Questo, Paul Caldwell, Garland Compton and Bill Owens.     Clifford Eugene Collins, of Lake Don Pedro, died Oct. 14 at an Oakdale hospital after a short illness. He was 74.
    Mr. Collins retired in 1990 after 35 years with IBM.
    He coached Little League baseball and was active in sports, hunting, fishing, painting, singing and golf. He served on the board of directors of Lake Don Pedro Community Services District and held numerous positions with the Lake Don Pedro Men's Golf Club. He was a tenor with the Gold Country Singers.
    Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his parents, Reo Collins and Viola (Ingram) Florey; and two sisters, Linda Wellner and Dorothy A. Vieweg.

    Jean Jones died Oct. 25 at her home in Pine Mountain Lake, Groveland, surrounded by family. She was 88.
    She was born in San Diego into a pioneer naval aviation family and received her primary and secondary education all over the world. She graduated from high school in the Panama Canal Zone and attended San Diego State College and the University of California, Los Angeles.
    She retired after many years in personnel with Sears, Roebuck & Co. She was involved in many extracurricular activities including PTA Beta Sigma Phi, Pine Mountain Lake Ladies Club, 9 Holers Golf Club and Helping Hands of Groveland.
    Her interests included bridge, reading, crossword puzzles, rummy tile and, especially, spending time with family.
    Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Leland D. Jones; a daughter, Julia Robles; a brother, John Green Jr., and her parents, John and Virginia Green.
    Mrs. Jones is survived by her daughter, Mary Virginia "Ginna" Padilla, of Pine Mountain Lake; her brother, William C.     Jack Urguhart, a 23 year resident of Groveland, died Oct. 26 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. He was 66. Mr. Urquhart was a psychiatric technician for 25 years as a California state employee.
    He was preceded in death by his father, Coy Urquhart, in 2003; a brother, Steve Urquhart, in 1985; and a daughter, Cassandra, in 1967.
    Survivors include his mother, Doris Urquhart, of Groveland; two sons, Peter Urquhart, of San Raphael, and Chad Urquhart, of Santa Rosa; two granddaughters, Kayla Urquhart and Chloe Urquhart, both of Santa Rosa; his ex-wife, Dolly Urquhart, of San Rafael; and a nephew, Paul Urquhart, of Santa Rosa; his aunt, Dorothy Wothe, of Groveland; his cousin and wife, Lee and Sandy Wothe, of Groveland; and their son, John Wothe, of Groveland.
    A graveside service was scheduled at 1 p.m. today at Oak Grove Cemetery. Heuton Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

    Kerry Lynn Raser-McAndrews died Oct. 31 at her Groveland home of heart failure. She was 53. She was a native of the Los Angeles area and lived in Groveland for the past eight years. She graduated from Our Lady of Corvallis High School in Studio City in 1974. As a young adult, she was a member of the Angels Theatre troupe, where she developed lifelong friends.
    She was a casting coordinator for such films as "Ghostbusters" in 1984 and "Kindergarten Cop" in 1990. Her interests included traveling, gardening, fashion and animals. She was also a gourmet cook, which led to her running the cafe, Emma's Place, in Groveland.
    She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Hollywood and St. Monica's Parish in Santa Monica.
    In recent years, her main interest was spending time with her children, Emma McAndrews, 11, of Groveland, and Christopher Benck, 21, of Virginia.
    In addition to her children, she is survived by Emma's father, Jeff McAndrews, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Christopher's father, John Benck, of Cairo, Egypt; siblings, David Raser and his wife, Susan, Derek Raser, and Chris Raser; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, 11700 Catholic Cemetery Road, Big Oak Flat. A celebration of her life will be held in Los Angeles at a later date. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of cremation arrangements.

    John "Jack" McMullen, of Coulterville, died Nov. 12 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. He was 64. Mr. McMullen was born in Buffalo, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was a commercial and residential painter for 30 years. He moved to Coulterville seven years ago, where he was a founding member of the Shindig Committee. He enjoyed playing guitar and fishing.
    Mr. McMullen is survived by his girlfriend, Brenda Perguson, of Groveland; his daughter, Megan H. McMullen, of San Diego; brothers, Paul McMullen, Jan McMullen and Michael McMullen, all of Pennsylvania; his sister, Teresa McMullen, of Pennsylvania; and close friends Peter Venturini, of Coulterville, and J.D. and Cindy Banning, of Oakdale.

    Mrs. Brown was a homemaker. Her family said she enjoyed crafts and reading. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 791 of San Jose.
    She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbie and Joe Olivera, of Groveland; her son, Richard Brown, of San Jose; a granddaughter, Jennifer Olivera, of Livermore; a brother, John Brusa, of New York; Joanne Quirt, whom Mrs. Brown regarded as her daughter, of Redwood City; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

    Groveland resident James "Jim" Coutchavlis died Dec. 12 at his home. He was 82.
    Mr. Coutchavlis was born in Nashua, N.H.; and was raised in Boston. He attended Boston Latin School, founded in 1635, the first public school in the U.S., and graduated from Boston University. Mr. Coutchavlis was a salesman for Dennison Manufacturing in Framingham, Mass. He married his wife, Marjorie "Margie" and they moved to Half Moon Bay in 1972, and raised their six children and became Realtors. They moved to Groveland in 1987 and opened the main street business "Critter Corner".
    For the past 10 years, Mr. Coutchavlis worked at the Pine Mountain Lake Marina. He was active in the American Legion and was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.
    Mr. Coutchavlis is survived by his wife, Marjorie Coutchavlis, of Groveland; children James george Coutchavlis II otherwise known as James St. James, Donna Lee Wong, of Manteca, Cynthia Coutchavlis, of San Jose, Jean Suzanne Lea, of Mountain View, Jay Lee Coburn, of Las Vegas and J. Curtis Coutchavlis, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
    In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 800-ACS-2345.
