Mecartea was killed by his friend, Dan Sullivan on 10 May 1916 at Sullivan Ranch, Groveland, Tuolumne Co., California. Newspaper accounts report that the two had been drinking and quarreling at the Sullivan Ranch near Groveland, and that Sullivan shot Mecartea in the chest with a rifle. Sullivan was ultimately convicted of manslaughter.3,1,4 He was buried on 13 May 1916 at Divide Cemetery Plot 4:138, Big Oak Flat, Tuolumne Co., California.1,5

Daniel Sullivan shot and instantly killed Chester B. Mecartea near Groveland Wednesday evening.
the tragedy was enacted on the ranch of Sullivan, located two miles from Groveland, and marked the close of a day spent in drinking and quarreling by the two men.
The facts in the case as near as can be ascertained at this writing and which were educed at the inquest held Thursday before Justice of the Peace J. C. DeFerrari at Groveland, are about as follows.
On Wednesday morning Mecartea and Wm. Foster, a nephew by marriage of Sullivan, went to Groveland and purchased a quart bottle of whiskey, returning to the Sullivan ranch. The men soon commenced drinking and finally Sullivan and Mecartea began to quarrel over various trifling matters. Invariably the quarrel would end and the men become engaged in pleasant converse for a time, when suddenly either one or the other would take exception to something said and the quarrel would be renewed. This prevailed throughout the day. the men were in the barn, situated quite a distance from the dwelling house, where Mrs. Foster, niece of sullivan, was looking after the household affairs. Foster and Mecartea went to supper shortly before * o'clock, leaving Sullivan in the barn. Mecartea declined to dine and when Foster had finished copper, he bid him good-bye, saying that he was going home. Foster accompanied him to the barn. Here Sullivan ordered Mecartea to leave the place, which he seemed in no hurry to do. sullivan then rushed up to the house and secured his rifle, returning with it to the barn. He attempted to use it then, but Foster interfered, and finally the men settled the trouble between them and engaged in pleasant conversation. Foster left then and started to walk around the barn. When he turned the last corner he observed Mecartea standing out a few feet from the barn door and heard him and his uncle talking low but apparently in friendly conversation. Suddenly he heard a report coming from the barn, saw Mecartea reel and fall prostrate upon the ground. Sullivan emerged with the smoking rifle in his hand. Foster hastened to Groveland and returned with Constable Lumsden who placed Sullivan under arrest. Mecartea was dead. The bullet struck him high on the left breast above the heart and emerged at the right shoulder.
Sullivan was taken to Groveland, unresisting, and locked up in jail. He was brought to Sonora the following afternoon and placed in the jail here. Sullivan is a man about 60 years of age. He has lived for many years in the Groveland section. His farm is rated as one of the best on the south side of the river.
Mecartea was about 47 years of age. He was born and reared in Groveland and leaves many relatives.
After the verdict of the coroner's jury had been rendered. Austin Mecartea, a brother of the dead man, swore to a complaint charging Sullivan with the crime of murder. His preliminary examination will be held in Groveland on the 19th last.

My grandfather Japser Arthur MECARTEA was th sixth child of James Wyatt MECARTEA & his wife Elvira SMITH MECARTEA. Your grandfather was the seventh child. I have been researching this family for about 35 years. I have traced this family beck to DE & NJ in 1790's. Who are your parents? Will be willing to exchange data with you. James in TACOMA WA

I also descend from James MeCartea (later spelled McCartea), and I used to visit the homestead at Big Oak Flat. My great grandfather was George Mecartea, one of James Mecartea's many sons. MeCartea descendants may contact me by my email address.

My grandpappy was Walter Delvid Mecartea. My Father was Keith Ray Mecartea. I am Brian Rexford Mecartea. Walter passed in 1967 in Fresno.Keith passed in 1988. I'm still kickin in Fresno, CA

Hello Brian, I missed your previous posting in 2001. My Great Grandmother Margaret Mae (nee Brickley; b. around 1866, d.1950) was married to George Sanford Mecartea / McCartea and they had three children: a boy who died very young, and two daughters: Margaret Mae Mecartea / McCartea (b.1889 d. 1966) and Mabel Elvira Mecartea / McCartea (b. 1893 d. 1973). Mabel McCartea (my Great Aunt) married Dale Glenn, but they did not have any children. Margaret Mae McCartea (my Grandmother) married Edwin Elias Anderson and they had two children. I descend from their (late) daughter Georgina Mae (b. 1915, d. 1966).
Returning to the story of George and *Maggie* Mecartea, afterwards they were divorced, and they each remarried. Maggie married Tim Hurley. All of them (except my mother) are buried in Fresno, either in the Calvary Cemetery or the Odd Fellows Cemetery -- hence very near each other. --Judy

From: The Big Oak Flat Road to Yosemite, by Margaret Schlichtmann &
Irene Paden, first published in 1955;
begins middle of page 133 (Chapter VI : The Big Oak on the Flat)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...Blacksmith shops were lively places. James Mecartea was far too busy
making picks at one dollar apiece and ox shoes, six for seventy cents,
to think of gold dust except as a means of exchange. So it happened that
the ground under his smithy was never panned. When his numerous children
asked for spending money it was his custom to suggest that they take a
pan and shovel and repair to the cellar which, on several notable
occasions, they actually did. During this decade it was usual to be paid
for blacksmith work in produce as money was scarce. The Golden Rock
Water Company paid in cash and was considered a very special customer.

...Indian women were hired to help Elvira Smith Mecartea with (page 134)
the enormous washings and heavy cleaning, but just to bake bread for so
many was a chore almost inconceivable today. A housewife of that
generation earned her passage through the world. All clothes for women
and some for boys were generally made at home; but in respect to the
sewing problem, Mrs. Mecartea was lucky. Only one of her thirteen
children was a girl -- Alice, a blonde and notably pretty.
At the age of seventy-five James Mecartea contracted pneumonia and
quit work and this life at the same time. His son Austin took over and
kept up the business until automobiles replaced the horse-drawn
vehicles, when he locked the heavy iron doors of his shop with the
five-inch key and retired into the old family home. Like many another
mountain bachelor he used only the kitchen, a bedroom and side porch.
Most of the cupboards had not been opened for so many years that they
had lost the knack and Austin had long since forgotten what was in them.
In the garden the figs still bore, the roses bloomed spicily and the
grape arbor increased to tremendous size. Eugene lived just across the
street. On the edge of his front porch stood a rain barrel where dozens
of song birds drank while a neighbor's cat with sleepy eyes but
switching tail sat nearby and schemed. The brothers spent hours together
on one porch or the other and, on many unhurried occasions, told us of
their happy childhood, of how the thirteen young Mecarteas worked,
played, studied, got sick and got well again. "We didn't have many
doctors and they lived a long way off," said Austin reminiscently.
"There was Dr. Williamson in early days when the mines were good but in
my time Dr. Lampson of Chinese Camp would have to ride up here in a
great emergency. But the women folks could handle most kinds of
sickness. Our mother could anyway." END

--Judy

Lt. Rexford W. Mecartea (Mecartes in Ted's Travelling Circus) was killed on 16 June 1944. He was flying in a 329th Squadron AC piloted by Capt. Stephen A. Soviar. The AC attempted to reach a Hardwick runway, but lost all power and crashlanded. His crew position is not given, but in another reference to the crash, it says that he and four of his crew were lost.

US Army Graves Registery has:
1st.Lt. Rexford W. Mecartea, Serv#0-750811, temporary burial site at Cambridge Cemetery, England, later moved to a private cemetery at request of next of kin to the state of California.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From: The Big Oak Flat Road to Yosemite, by Margaret Schlichtmann &
Irene Paden, first published in 1955;
begins middle of page 133 (Chapter VI : The Big Oak on the Flat)

He does not appear in Divide Cemetery records. A Mecartea family correspondant states in email to Karen Davis of GYGM in 2007 "Don't know when [Elias] died, but he shows up on the 1870 census, at least I think he does under the initials of EC. [Padden and Schlictmann] claim that 13 Mecartea kids lived in that house in BOF so you think he would be buried there. According to James Mecartea's records Elias was born 16 Aug 1856." James Mecartea of Tacoma, Washington added in April, 2007: " I have searched the cemetery at Chinese Camp several times. It lies across the road from the town. There is no headstone for Eliias MECARTEA . I believe he died in an Epidemic but I cannot prove it. His middle name is Washington. That also is the name of the main street in Chinese Camp. I have talked personally with a member of the Cemetery board. No plot plan exists he said. Fresh graves appeared from time to time in the cemetery. I asked him if it was possible persons were being buried on top of other graves. He said it is possible." Elias Washington Mecartea was born on 16 August 1856 at Chinese Camp, Tuolumne Co., California.1,2 He was the son of James Wyatt Mecartea and Elvira (Smith) Mecartea.1 No death record has been found for Elias.

     He Brief Bio:

THE MERRELLS OF MERRELL ROAD

Josiah M. Merrell, a son of Charles G. Merrell, was born in 1833 in Syracuse, New York. In 1847 the family immigrated to the Pacific coast, making the journey overland to the Washington Territory. Josiah accompanied his father on a short excursion to California at about the same time as the California Gold Rush and then both returned to Oregon where his father made a permanent settlement in what is now known as Washington County. Subsequent to the gold and silver bonanza in the Idaho Territory (comprised of Idaho, Montana and eventually Wyoming) Josiah made his way to Butte City Montana and worked as a miner. Within a very short time he moved to Philipsburg Montana where he operated a grocery store. Shortly thereafter he partnered with miners James W. Estill and Eli D. Holland to develop the Granite Mine, located three miles from Philipsburg, which by 1894 was one of the bonanza mines [silver] of America.

Josiah was married twice. His first marriage (of short duration) in 1876 was to Sarah A. (Waterbury) Murdock. Sarah was the sister of Edwin B Waterbury, Philipsburg’s Justice of the Peace. Josiah and his second wife Elizabeth Davis were married in Deer Lodge County in 1878. Elizabeth was the daughter of David and Jane (Scott) Davis of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Their son Millard was born in Butte in 1884. A multi-millionaire with considerable mining and mercantile investments Josiah removed his family to California and settled in Oakland in1888. Their home was situated right in the heart of the city on Telegraph Avenue between Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth streets. The grounds occupied one city block and were among the largest of city gardens.

The Merrell’s son Millard received his elementary school education in Europe, attended high school in Oakland and obtained a mining engineering degree from South Dakota School of Mines. While Millard studied Civil and Mining Engineering at the Michigan College of Mines in Houghton Michigan his father obtained title to the Cosmopolite mine. The mine was situated near the head of Garrote Creek in the hills between the Divide Cemetery and Merrell Road. A 10-stamp mill, formerly known as the Cross or Anita mill, belonged to the mine. Early in the 1900s, an article in the Union Democrat states “The Cosmopolite near Groveland was to have started up this week. The mine has been lying idle for a year, though at the time of closing down the rock was said to have been very good. Owner J. M. Merrill of San Francisco is on the ground and intends to give the vein a long and thorough shaking up. From fifteen to twenty men will be employed. The claim is equipped with a good hoist and five-stamp mill.”

The Merrell’s maintained their home in Oakland until the death of Elizabeth in May, 1905. Millard worked as a mining engineer in Montana and South Dakota before he married Eva Jane Edwards (formerly Mrs. Roy Mills) in 1907 and the two of them moved to Groveland. Josiah (Millard’s 78 year old father) lived with them until his death April 28, 1913 and he’s buried in the Divide Cemetery.

Although Millard and Eva had no children they raised Eva’s granddaughter Byronel Beatrice Ogden as their own. Eva’s daughter by her first marriage, Genevieve Mills, married Charles Gordon Ogden (son of Byron and Mary (Nye) Ogden) and bore Byronel before she died at the age of 17. Both the Ogden and Nye families were early settlers of this area. Byronel was born in 1910 and attended Groveland schools and Sonora High. She married Alvin Lindsay Myers when she was 18 years old and they lived in Moccasin Village where Alvin worked as a clerk at the hydro electric plant. Unfortunately the marriage did not last and she later married George Fletcher. Byronel died in Groveland in1955 and is buried in the family plot in the Divide Cemetery.

Continuing his work as owner and supervisor of the Cosmopolite Mine, Millard also served as Judge of the Groveland Judicial District Court from 1922 to 1926 and served as Chairman of the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors as well as President of the California Supervisors Association. He was also instrumental in the formation of Groveland’s Community Services District.

It was shortly after the Merrells moved from their home (at the intersection of Merrell Road and Highway 120) to Modesto that Eva died in 1962. She was the daughter of George and Martha (Wilkenson) Edwards and was born in San Francisco in 1874. She was a charter member of the Sonora Seventh Day Adventist Church and a member of the Aronos Club. The widower Millard, residing in a Modesto rest home, died seven years later. Both are buried in the family plot in the Divide Cemetery.

Amy and Walter moved to Pasadena , which is where we assume she died, especially since my father, Ed Watson (nickname- Teddy), remembers going to a funeral for a Williams lady in Pasadena, who died at almost 100 years old, with his Grandmother ( our beloved Edith ). He just doesn't recall that this was his great Grandmothers funeral. The info fits. Amy Williams was almost 100 at death.

obituary for Walter Lee Mecartea.
He is definitely my GrGr Grandfather, father to my beloved Great Grandmother Edith Ruth Mecartea-Hogan-Mattly.My father is listed as his survivor and Great Grandson. My grandmother and great grandmother are also listed, along with daughter Minola and, The obit says he is 78, which by subtraction would be correct. It says he resided at Casa Loma Drive, which is the home my Gr Grandmother lived in all of my life. It also says he was a shoemaker by trade and declared to be the first white child born in Chinese Camp in California's gold rush days. He was the son of the late James W. Mecartea, who settled in Sonora County, after going west in a covered wagon. It also says he resided in Bakersfield for 16 years.

--Judy. He was Blacksmith at Fresno, Fresno Co., California.5 He appeared on the census of 1870 as G'[ing], an 8-year-old male in the household of James Wyatt Mecartea and Elvira (Smith) Mecartea at Chinese Camp Post Office, Township 3, Tuolumne Co., California. I'm looking for a connection to my GGGrand Father John Brickley who was married to Sarah McCormick.

John Brickley fought in the Civil War (Union side) with the Illinois Cavalry, and then later came with wife Sarah to California.

They had a daughter named Margaret Mae ("Maggie") Brickley. She married George MeCartea -- and we spelled it McCartea -- but it is McCarthy clan.

Any assistance on the Irish side would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Bill J.

Here's a link to the Calvary Cemetery in Fresno, California, where our
HURLEY family members are buried. It's a long list, so look under H--

Timothy HURLEY (1866 - 4/21/1918) in the list was the second husband of
my g-grandmother Margaret HURLEY also buried there (5/29/1866 -
1/11/1950). Tim HURLEY was a blacksmith, and Margaret's first husband
was blacksmith George MECARTEA, son of the James MECARTEA in my earlier
