Now & Then: Garrote (Mueller) Brewery

In 1853, Ferdinand Stachler built a brewery one mile east of Groveland on what is now Old Highway 120 and called it Garrote Brewery. It was conveniently located on the Big Oak Flat Road and became a popular stopping place for travelers. Local farmers grew and sold barley to the brewmaster until the brewery ceased operation after some 50 years.

In 1865, German born Eugene Mueller bought the brewery, renamed it Mueller Brewery and operated it until his death in 1906. Eugene added wide front doors to Stachler’s original rectangular building and provided long wooden tables and ample shade trees for his customers seeking rest, relaxation and libation.

Mueller served not only Groveland and its surrounding areas, but he also sent his famous ale over the Sierra to the mining camp of Bodie. With some 65 saloons, Bodie consumed great quantities of his Groveland brewed beverage.

Mueller shipped his product to Bodie by way of the Bloody Canyon Trail, aptly named for the sharp treacherous rocks which often caused cuts to the legs of horses and pack animals traveling its route. An occasional lost cask or mule was not uncommon due to the dangerous loose rock on the trail’s edge.

Besides his famous ale, Mueller also produced a gin product that was popular with the locals. The brewery building stood unused from about 1911 until World War II. Over time the brewery building decayed leaving only the stone ruins of the rear wall, a stone hop kiln, and large spring-fed pit which may have been used to keep the beer cold.

Eugene and Pauline Mueller had four children over the years, three daughters and one son. Two daughters, Louisa and Clara married brothers Herman and Henry Porath. Son Paul, also known as Eugene Jr., was killed instantly in his 40s while working as a timber faller. The Mueller family is interred in the Oak Grove (Divide Cemetery).

History of Curtis Creek School
Curtis Creek School District was formed by order of the County Board of Supervisors on May 16, 1865, with approximately 25 students. The first school building was a small temporary house built for about $130.00. The original building was located on a small flat on the east side of Sullivan Creek where the old road to Cherokee Camp crossed. This location is north of the present day Sullivan Creek bridge on Highway 108, about 300 yards up stream. The location of the school did not please many parents because the school was far from where most of the students lived. The school was moved two miles east onto land donated by ranch owner Riley Alexander Gilkey.

In 1873, a new school house was erected. It was a single room construction, 32 feet long and 22 feet wide. The new building had eight windows with a veranda on all sides, and a small bell added as a final touch to call all the students to class. After the town of Standard formed, the School Board met and later erected a new school in May, 1915 at 18755 Standard Road.

Many well known Tuolumne County teachers have taught at Curtis Creek School: George Phillip, Ted Ortega, M.W. Brooks, Jannin Fahey, Annie Booth, Catherine Warne, Alice Warne, Mamie Burke, Nelly Doly, Winnie Gallagher and Pearl Murrow Hoskins. Some of the County records have been lost and so this list is not complete. The average monthly income for a teacher in the 1900's was $60.00. In 1921 the Curtis Creek District ran out of funds, and some teachers taught that year without a salary, and didn't ask for backpay or a raise later.

Some of the Principals at Curtis Creek before 1955 were: Mrs. Fasse, W.C. McKee, R.I. Salmon, Mrs. Sadie Nichols, H. Nina, and U. Bension. In the mid 1930's, a two room auditorium and an office were added to the school and more changes occurred after 1940. The girls' basement was divided in half and a school lunch program started - the first in Tuolumne County! Mrs. Charlotte Proctor was the first cook to prepare hot lunches. She made about 70 hot lunches a day.

Other employees of the school were: Warden Black, Beth Parke, Fred Reitz, James Harry, Ben Zeigler, Gardner Woodhoms, Felix Gramwell and Clif Suttle.

Today, the school is a large school and only one of the original buildings remain and it is used as an office located at the school's entrance. between 1940 and 1950 at Tuolumne Co., CA.4

They added a row of one- and two-bedroom cabins, each with a covered front porch, to suppliment the rooms available in the main building. On Saturday nights they served a fried chicken dinner in the hotel dining room. Seating was at long tables, and food was passed up and down the tables in large bowls. The menu was fixed -- you got fried chicken, potatoes, and whatever else was in season, as well as a choice of beverage. Dessert was frequently pie or cobbler featuring local blackberries, peaches or apples. The dining room was always crowded, a testament to the popularity of the dinners among locals and tourists alike. Many return visitors scheduled their trips to be in Groveland on Saturday night just for fried chicken.5,6,7

    Chapter IX: ABOVE THE SETTLEMENTS
In freighting days one of the sections of road most frequently damned was known as Second Garrote Hill and, starting near the creek, led up and out of that inconsiderable settlement. Drivers considered it almost as bad as Moccasin Hill and added an extra span of horses to the stage before attempting it.

Near the summit of the modern grade the Golden Rock Ditch crosses the road and may be seen, perfectly dry, following the contours of the mountain. A short drive, over the crest of the hill and down a slighter slope, brings one to Sugar Pine Ranch.

The first settler built a cabin here in the ’60s. He was called John Ratto. About 25 years later a French gentleman named Peri bought the land and planted at least some of the fruit trees. Between 1900 and 1902 two men from Boston, Benjamin Shaw and Lester Wiley, obtained the place from Mr. Peri and organized the Yosemite Power Company in order to use the greatly deteriorated ditch facilities of the Golden Rock Water Company. They built the present large white house as headquarters and apparently lived there also. For over a decade it was the scene of many a festivity. Mr. Wiley, who seems to have been the general manager, ceased operations about 1917 and the power company was abandoned but the Shaw family remained some twenty years longer. Two other owners made successive improvements. Then, in 1946, it was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Osborne.

They cleared out an amazing number of account books dating back to the 1860s; made the second floor over into bedrooms and built attractive cabins to act as a ranch-motel. Between hotel and cabins, bridged for easy crossing, runs the ditch. Between hotel and highway ran the original Big Oak Flat Road. This is an excellent place to see both.

Down the highway just beyond the inn is the Church of Christ— a box-like rectangle with a red roof. It is on Mr. Osborne’s land; he built it himself and officiates each Sunday. The traveler passing by during church services will find the road practically blocked with cars.

The orchard to the east of Sugar Pine Ranch was once part of the Watson acreage and, beyond it, was the Gravel Range School which educated 10 to 25 scholars.
